Judgment

卦辭

無妄:元亨利貞。其匪正有眚,不利有攸往。

Innocence. Supreme success. Perseverance furthers. If someone is not as he should be, he has misfortune, and it does not further him to undertake anything.

象傳

象曰:天下雷行,物與無妄;先王以茂對時,育萬物。

Under heaven thunder rolls: all things attain the natural state of innocence. Thus the kings of old, rich in virtue, in harmony with the time, fostered and nourished all beings.


Interpretation

詮釋

無妄卦象徵純真無欲。天下有雷,自然運行。暗示著順應天道,真誠無偽,不可妄為。

Innocence and naturalness. Thunder under heaven, natural operation. Suggests following heavenly way, sincere and genuine, must not act recklessly.

Nine at the beginning

初九

無妄,往吉。

Innocent behavior brings good fortune.

無妄而行,前往則吉。真誠無欲,順其自然則順利。

Acting innocently, going forward brings fortune. Sincere and desireless, following nature brings success.

Six in the second place

六二

不耕穫,不菑畬,則利有攸往。

If one does not count on the harvest while plowing, nor on the use of the ground while clearing it, it furthers one to undertake something.

不期望收穫而耕作,不期望成果而開墾,則利於前往。無欲無求,自然得利。

Plowing without expecting harvest, clearing without expecting results, favorable to proceed. Without desire or demand, naturally gains benefit.

Six in the third place

六三

無妄之災,或繫之牛,行人之得,邑人之災。

Undeserved misfortune. The cow that was tethered by someone is the wanderer's gain, the citizen's loss.

無妄之災,牛被人拴住,行人得利,邑人受災。無故遭難,禍從天降。

Undeserved disaster, cow tethered by someone, wanderer gains, citizen suffers. Suffering for no reason, misfortune from heaven.

Nine in the fourth place

九四

可貞,無咎。

He who can be persevering remains without blame.

能守正則無咎。堅守本心,不為外物所動。

Able to maintain correctness brings no blame. Firmly holding to one's heart, unmoved by external things.

Nine in the fifth place

九五

無妄之疾,勿藥有喜。

Illness due to innocence. Do not use medicine. There will be cause for joy.

無妄之疾,不用藥而自癒,有喜。順其自然,無需刻意治療。

Innocent illness, healing without medicine, brings joy. Following nature, no need for deliberate treatment.

Nine at the top

上九

無妄,行有眚,無攸利。

Innocent action brings misfortune. Nothing furthers.

無妄而行動有災,無所利。妄動不當時,反招災禍。

Innocent action brings disaster, nothing benefits. Acting at the wrong time invites calamity.
