卦辭
臨:元亨利貞。至於八月有凶。
Approach has supreme success. Perseverance furthers. When the eighth month comes, there will be misfortune.

象傳
象曰:澤上有地,臨;君子以教思無窮,容保民無疆。
The earth above the lake: the image of Approach. Thus the superior man is inexhaustible in his will to teach, and without limits in his tolerance and protection of the people.
Interpretation
詮釋
臨卦象徵臨近與照顧。大地覆蓋湖澤,由上臨下。暗示著領導者親臨關懷,但盛極將衰,需居安思危。
Approaching and caring. Earth covering the lake, descending from above. Suggests leadership and care, but warns that prosperity will decline, requiring vigilance.

初九
咸臨,貞吉。
Joint approach. Perseverance brings good fortune.
共同臨近,守正則吉。與民同心,感應而臨。
Approaching together, maintaining correctness brings fortune. United with the people in mutual response.
Nine in the second place
九二
咸臨,吉,無不利。
Joint approach. Good fortune. Everything furthers.
共同臨近,吉,無所不利。處中正位,感化眾人。
Approaching together brings fortune. Everything is favorable. In the central correct position, influencing all.
Six in the third place
六三
甘臨,無攸利。既憂之,無咎。
Comfortable approach. Nothing that would further. If one is induced to grieve over it, one becomes free of blame.
甜言臨近,無所利。若能憂慮警覺,則無咎。享樂必敗,警醒則安。
Superficial approach brings no benefit. If one worries and stays alert, there's no blame. Indulgence leads to failure, vigilance to safety.

至臨,無咎。
Complete approach. No blame.
親至臨近,無咎。真誠接近,盡心盡力。
Personally approaching brings no blame. Sincere approach with full dedication.

知臨,大君之宜,吉。
Wise approach. This is right for a great prince. Good fortune.
智慧臨民,大君之道,吉。以智慧統治,知人善任。
Wise leadership, the way of a great ruler. Good fortune. Governing with wisdom, knowing and employing people well.
Six at the top
上六
敦臨,吉,無咎。
Generous approach. Good fortune. No blame.
厚道臨民,吉,無咎。寬厚仁慈,德化萬民。
Magnanimous leadership brings fortune and no blame. Generous and benevolent, transforming all through virtue.
