Meaning 意義
Oṃ: universal invocation. Amideva: Amitābha as a divine being (Amitāyus, boundless life). Hrīḥ: the seed syllable of Amitābha and Avalokiteśvara — the essence of discriminating wisdom and compassion.

Recited for rebirth in Amitābha's Pure Land Sukhāvatī (Western Pure Land); at the moment of death and during Phowa practice. Also used in longevity practices and to benefit those who have died.
Background & Significance 背景與意義
Amitābha (Skt: 'Boundless Light'; Tib: Öpame) is the Buddha of the Western Pure Land Sukhāvatī (Tib: Dewachen — Land of Great Bliss). His red form holds a begging bowl in his lap and sits in meditation posture. In Tibetan Buddhism, Amitābha is the head of the Lotus family and the source of discriminating wisdom. His manifestation as Amitāyus (Boundless Life — holding a vase of amrita, the nectar of immortality) is the central figure of longevity practice. Rebirth in Sukhāvatī is considered equivalent to enlightenment in one lifetime, as beings born there have access to Amitābha's teachings directly. The Phowa practice directs consciousness to Amitābha's pure realm at death, and the mantra is recited extensively in Tibetan Pure Land practices.
