Kaitan (開壇儀式)
Opening the Altar — Establishing the Sacred Space
Theory: Creating the Ritual Container
Every Liuren ceremony begins with Kaitan — the formal opening of the altar. Without this, any ritual acts that follow lack spiritual authority (法威). Kaitan clears the space of stagnant or hostile energies, invites the lineage protectors, and formally declares the master's right to conduct the work. It is analogous to establishing a proper ritual container in Western ceremonial traditions.
Ritual Steps
- Purification: Burn camphor and walk the perimeter of the space three times counter-clockwise to expel stale energy.
- Incense Lighting: Light three sticks of high-quality agaru (agarwood) incense on the main altar, representing Heaven, Earth, and Humanity.
- Lineage Invocation: Recite the Liuren Fajiao lineage prayer, naming the ancestral masters from Li Chunfeng's third son through to the current generation.
- Space Declaration: Strike the ritual bell three times and declare the altar open in the name of the Six Ren (六壬).
- Closing Barrier: Affix the altar seal on all four sides to prevent unwanted intrusions during the ceremony.
