二十七宿概覽

The 27 Nakshatras (二十七宿)

Nakshatras are the 27 divisions of the ecliptic, each spanning 13°20'. They form the backbone of Vedic astrology, determining the Dasha (planetary period) system and providing deep personality and karmic insights beyond the 12 Rashis (zodiac signs).

Structure

Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 Padas (quarters) of 3°20', creating 108 Navamsa divisions total. The Moon's Nakshatra at birth determines the starting Dasha lord in the Vimshottari system.

Classification

  • By Gana (Temperament): Deva (divine), Manushya (human), Rakshasa (demonic) — used in marriage compatibility.
  • By Nature: Dhruva (fixed), Chara (movable), Tikshna (sharp), Mridu (soft), Ugra (fierce), Mishra (mixed), Laghu (light).
  • By Yoni (Animal Symbol): 14 animal pairs used in Nadi matching for compatibility.

Key Nakshatras

  • Ashwini (அசுவினி): Ruled by Ketu — healing, speed, new beginnings.
  • Rohini (ரோகிணி): Ruled by Moon — beauty, creativity, material abundance.
  • Pushya (பூசம்): Ruled by Saturn — most auspicious Nakshatra, nourishment, spiritual growth.
  • Moola (மூலம்): Ruled by Ketu — transformation, destruction of old patterns, spiritual depth.
