Ashtakavarga: Eight-Source Point System (八分法)
Ashtakavarga (அஷ்டகவர்க்கம்) is a unique quantitative system in Vedic astrology that evaluates the benefic and malefic influence of each planet across all 12 signs. The name means 'eight divisions' (Ashta = eight, Varga = division), referring to the eight contributing sources: the seven planets plus the Ascendant (Lagna). It is primarily used for transit prediction but also reveals inherent chart strengths.
How It Works
For each of the seven planets (Sun through Saturn), a separate Ashtakavarga chart is constructed. Each contributing source (the seven planets plus Lagna) places Bindus (benefic points) in signs where a transiting planet would produce positive results relative to that source's natal position. The result is a 12-sign table showing 0 to 8 Bindus per sign for each planet.
Key Metrics
- Individual Ashtakavarga (Bhinnashtakavarga): Each planet's own point distribution across 12 signs. A sign with 4+ Bindus is favorable for that planet's transit; below 4 is unfavorable. Maximum possible is 8 Bindus (all sources contributing).
- Sarvashtakavarga (Total Points): The sum of all seven planets' Bhinnashtakavarga charts. Each sign receives a total score (range roughly 18-35). Signs with 28+ points are generally strong; below 25 indicates weakness. The Sarvashtakavarga total is always 337 points across all 12 signs.
- Kaksha (Sub-division): Each sign is divided into 8 Kakshas of 3°45', each ruled by one of the eight sources. When a planet transits a Kaksha whose ruler contributes a Bindu, results are positive; otherwise, negative.
Practical Applications
Ashtakavarga excels at transit timing — predicting when Saturn's Sade Sati or Jupiter's transit will be beneficial vs. challenging for a specific individual. It also indicates longevity (signs with low Bindus in Saturn's Ashtakavarga are vulnerable periods), financial potential (Jupiter's Ashtakavarga strength in the 2nd and 11th houses), and relationship timing (Venus's Bindu count in the 7th house during transit).
Cross-System Note
Ashtakavarga has no direct Chinese parallel, as BaZi and ZWDS use qualitative assessment rather than quantitative point accumulation. However, the concept of evaluating benefic/malefic influence from multiple reference points resonates with the multi-factor analysis approach in Zi Wei Dou Shu star brightness ratings.
