The Chinese system names its three primary palm lines according to the 天地人 (Tiān Dì Rén / Heaven, Human, Earth) cosmological triad — a distinctly Chinese categorization that reflects the system's cosmological grounding. These three lines form the fundamental framework of any palm reading, providing a complete picture of the individual's emotional life, intellectual capacity, and physical constitution.
天紋線 (Tiān Wén Xiàn / Heaven Line) — The Heart Line
The Heaven Line runs horizontally at the top of the palm, beneath the fingers, corresponding to the domain of Heaven (天) — emotions, spiritual connections, and the highest dimension of human experience. It begins beneath the little finger (Mercury mound) and extends toward the index finger (Jupiter mound) or beyond.
Key Interpretation Parameters:
- Length: A long Heaven Line extending toward the index finger or Saturn finger indicates deep emotional capacity, generosity in love, and idealistic romanticism — profound capacity for emotional connection. - Separation from Life Line: When the Human Line begins separately from the Life Line (a gap between their origins), the person is independent-minded and makes decisions freely of family influence. A long shared origin indicates a cautious, family-dependent decision-making style.

Critical Misconception (重要誤區): The most widespread error in palmistry — in both Chinese and Western traditions — is equating a short Life Line with a short life. Classical texts including Shen Xiang Quan Bian explicitly state: the Life Line indicates the quality of vitality, not the quantity of years. A short but deep, clear Life Line may belong to someone who lives to 90 with robust health. The true measure of vitality is depth, clarity, and the presence of supporting lines, not length.
- Sweep: A Life Line that sweeps wide into the palm creates a large curve and indicates abundant physical energy, enthusiasm, and an expansive approach to life. A line staying close to the thumb suggests lower physical vitality and preference for quieter pursuits.
- Breaks: A break indicates a major life change — serious illness, relocation, or fundamental lifestyle transformation. Importantly, a break does not mean death. A parallel inner Life Line (內生命線) mitigates any break's impact.
- Age Mapping (年齡劃分): Ages are mapped along the Life Line — origin near the index finger represents birth, the midpoint approximately age 40, and the terminus near the wrist represents old age. This allows temporal event placement for breaks, islands, and branches.
Secondary Lines of High Importance
