The Hundred Year Face Map (百歲流年圖)
One of the most technically sophisticated and practically powerful tools in Mian Xiang is the Hundred Year Face Map (百歲流年圖). This system assigns every age from 1 to 100 to a specific anatomical point on the face, converting the static landscape of facial features into a dynamic temporal atlas. A skilled practitioner can thus not only read character and constitution, but predict the timing of significant events, fortune shifts, and health cycles across the full arc of a human life.
The foundational cosmological framework divides the face into Three Zones (三停), corresponding to the Taoist triune of Heaven, Humanity, and Earth:
The Three Zones (三停)
- Upper Zone — Heaven (天停), Ages 1–30: From the hairline to the top of the eyebrows. Governs inherited fortune, ancestral blessings, intellectual capacity, and the fortunes of youth. A high, broad, smooth Upper Zone without moles or scars indicates excellent early fortune and strong ancestral support.
- Middle Zone — Humanity (人停), Ages 31–50: From the eyebrows to the base of the nose. This is the prime working zone, governing career, wealth, marriage, and the peak years of worldly achievement. In the classical ideal, the Middle Zone should be the longest of the three, indicating a life of sustained achievement and prosperity.
- Lower Zone — Earth (地停), Ages 51 onwards: From the base of the nose to the chin. Governs later-life fortune, relationship with children and subordinates, retirement comfort, and longevity. A full, round, well-padded Lower Zone — particularly a strong chin (地閣 Earth Pavilion) — signals comfortable old age and filial support.
Age-by-Age Mapping: Key Positions
The system is reading-direction-sensitive: for males, the map runs from left to right across each zone; for females, from right to left. The full system assigns 100 named positions, of which the following are the most diagnostically significant:
Ages 1–14: The Ears (耳部流年)
The ears represent the earliest period of life — family environment, inherited health, and foundational fortune. Age 1 begins at the upper helix of the left ear (for males). Ages progress through the ear structure, alternating between left and right, concluding at the right ear lobe at age 14. An examination of the ears thus provides a complete picture of the first fourteen years: kidney constitution, family harmony, and the quality of inherited blessings.
Ages 15–30: The Forehead (額頭流年)
The forehead contains named positions corresponding to social emergence, academic success, and early career trajectory. Key positions include:
- Age 15–16 (Mars Corners): Left and right upper forehead corners — social emergence and first public positioning.
- Age 19 (Celestial Center 天中): Upper forehead center — a luminous, unobstructed Celestial Center is a hallmark of strong official or intellectual destiny.
- Age 28 (Seal Hall 印堂): The space between the eyebrows, also called the Life Palace (命宮). This is among the most critical positions on the entire face. Wide, bright, and unobstructed: broad vision, good fortune, health. Narrow, sunken, marked with lines: anxiety, narrowmindedness, and blocked opportunities.
Ages 31–40: The Eyes and Brow Area (眉眼流年)
The brow peaks at ages 31–32 (Fire Lamp positions) signal the height of personal ambition. Ages 35–36 correspond to the eyes themselves (Sun and Moon positions), representing the peak of vitality and the primary window of worldly achievement. Ages 39–40 (Child Palaces, under the eyes) relate to fertility, legacy, and relationship with one's children.
Ages 41–50: The Nose (鼻部流年)
The nose decade is universally regarded as the most important in the entire map for financial and career analysis. Age 41 (Mountain Root / 山根) sets the health foundation. Age 45 (Nose Bridge Center) marks the midpoint of peak earning. Age 48 (Nose Tip / 准頭) is the single most important wealth position on the entire face — a healthy, fleshy, luminous nose tip at this age is the strongest possible indicator of peak prosperity. Ages 49–50 (Nose Wings / 鼻翼) govern savings and wealth retention.
Ages 51–75: Mouth, Philtrum, Chin, and Jaw
The lower face governs the final decades. The philtrum (人中, ages 51–52) relates to longevity and descendants. The mouth area (ages 53–60) governs financial settlement, social status, and communication in mid-to-late life. The chin and jaw (ages 61–75) represent the deep foundation of old age — a strong, full chin (地閣) with good flesh and color indicates peaceful retirement, filial children, and a respected legacy.
Reading Procedure
A complete temporal reading follows these steps:
- Identify the subject's current age and locate the corresponding position on the map.
- Assess the quality of that position: Is it full and bright, or sunken, marked, discolored?
- Read color changes: Bright yellow-white indicates upcoming good fortune; dark, dull, or grayish tones signal challenges; a purplish glow can indicate both intense events and health concerns depending on location.
- Track trajectory: Compare the positions covering the next 3–5 years to project the trend of fortune.
- Cross-validate with Palm: Classical practice requires correlating temporal face readings with the Life Line age points on the palm for a more accurate picture.
