Mian Xiang (面相學) — The Art of Face Reading

"The mind gives birth to the face; the face changes with the mind." (相由心生,境由心轉). Mian Xiang is not just about static features; it is the study of how internal Qi and character manifest as external form. In the Five Arts, it falls under Physiognomy (相 Xiang) and is used for rapid character assessment and identifying immediate luck cycles.

The 100-Year Life Map (百歲流年圖)

The face is a chronological map of a person's life, divided into segments representing different ages:

  • Ages 1–14: The Ears — Early childhood and ancestral luck
  • Ages 15–30: The Forehead — Youth, education, and career start
  • Ages 31–40: The Eyebrows and Eyes — Middle age, ambition, and spirit
  • Ages 41–50: The Nose — Wealth, self-esteem, and peak career
  • Ages 51–60: The Philtrum and Cheeks — Health and authority
  • Ages 61–100: The Chin and Jawline — Retirement and later years

Key Observation: The Eyes

The Left Eye represents the Sun/Yang (Father/Rationality), and the Right Eye represents the Moon/Yin (Mother/Emotion). Asymmetry reveals internal conflicts or family dynamics. The eye's brightness (神 Shen) reveals spiritual vitality and intelligence.

The Twelve Palaces (十二宮)

The face is divided into twelve Palaces that govern specific life domains:

  • Life Palace (命宮): Between the eyebrows (印堂 Yin Tang). The most important feature — clarity indicates clear destiny and good fortune.
  • Career Palace (官祿宮): The forehead — career achievement and public recognition.
  • Wealth Palace (財帛宮): The nose — financial capacity and self-worth.
  • Marriage Palace (妻妾宮): Outer eye corners (魚尾) — romantic relationships and partnership quality.
  • Children Palace (子女宮): Below the eyes — relationship with children and subordinates.
  • Siblings Palace (兄弟宮): The eyebrows — relationships with siblings and peers.
  • Property Palace (田宅宮): The eyelids — home environment and real estate fortune.
  • Travel Palace (遷移宮): The ears — fortune in travel and foreign affairs.
  • Health Palace (疾厄宮): The Yin Tang and nose bridge — physical constitution.
  • Servants Palace (奴僕宮): The chin — subordinates and support from others.
  • Parents Palace (父母宮): The sun-moon temples (日月角) — relationship with parents and authority.
  • Fortune Palace (福德宮): The forehead space — inner happiness and karmic blessings.
