The Eight Extraordinary Vessels (奇經八脈)
The Eight Extraordinary Vessels (奇經八脈, Qi Jing Ba Mai) are the deeper energetic infrastructure of the body — the reservoirs and regulators that underlie the twelve primary meridians. They do not have their own acupoints (except Du Mai and Ren Mai) but are accessed through master points on the twelve meridians.
Du Mai (督脈) — The Governing Vessel
Runs along the spine from the perineum to the upper lip. Governs all Yang channels — called the 'Sea of Yang Channels' (陽脈之海). In Neidan practice, the Du Mai is the ascending Yang path of the Microcosmic Orbit. Master point: SI-3 (後溪).
Ren Mai (任脈) — The Conception Vessel
Runs along the front midline from the perineum to the lower lip. Governs all Yin channels — called the 'Sea of Yin Channels' (陰脈之海). Contains the three Dantian points (CV-6, CV-12, CV-17). In Neidan, the descending Yin path of the Microcosmic Orbit. Master point: LU-7 (列缺).
Chong Mai (衝脈) — The Penetrating Vessel
Called the 'Sea of the 12 Meridians' and 'Sea of Blood'. Fundamental in reproductive physiology — governs menstruation in women, ancestral Jing in men. Master point: SP-4 (公孫).
Dai Mai (帶脈) — The Girdle Vessel
The only horizontal meridian — binds all vertical channels at the waist. Governs lower body and reproductive organs. Strengthening Dai Mai improves lower body vitality and Jing retention. Master point: GB-41 (足臨泣).
The Four Heel and Linking Vessels
Yin Qiao / Yang Qiao Mai — govern locomotion and eye opening/closing. Yin Wei / Yang Wei Mai — link and coordinate all Yin or Yang channels respectively. These four vessels become important in the treatment of chronic constitutional conditions that involve both Yin and Yang channel disorders.
Extraordinary Vessels and Neidan
The eight extraordinary vessels are the energetic highways of the Neidan Macrocosmic Orbit. As Qi is refined through inner alchemy practice, it progressively activates and fills these vessels — transforming them from passive reservoirs into active channels of cultivated Yuan Qi.
