Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions — The Four Celestial Palaces

二十八宿 — 四象星宿

Historical Origins

The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions (二十八宿, Er Shi Ba Xiu) constitute one of the oldest continuous astronomical traditions in human civilization. Archaeological evidence and textual records place the framework's basic structure in the Spring and Autumn period (770–476 BCE), with systematic documentation in the Warring States period (475–221 BCE). The Zhou Li (周禮) records that imperial officials were appointed specifically to observe the moon's nightly position among these twenty-eight stations. The astronomer-polymath Sima Qian (司馬遷) documented the system comprehensively in the Shi Ji (史記), Tian Guan Shu (天官書). Zhang Heng (張衡, 78–139 CE) further refined the astronomical coordinates in his Ling Xian (靈憲). The Chinese system shares conceptual parallels with the Hindu Nakshatras and the Arabic Manazil al-Qamar, but its unique integration with the Four Mythological Creatures, the Five Elements, and practical date-selection methodology distinguishes it as an independent tradition.

The Four Celestial Palaces (四象)

The 28 Mansions are organized into four groups of seven, each assigned to one of the four mythological creatures (四象, Si Xiang) governing a cardinal direction and season:

Azure Dragon (青龍) — East — Spring — Wood

Mansions 1–7: 角 (Jiao) Horn · 亢 (Kang) Neck · 氐 (Di) Root · 房 (Fang) Chamber · 心 (Xin) Heart · 尾 (Wei) Tail · 箕 (Ji) Winnowing Basket. The Azure Dragon constellations govern growth, new beginnings, and forward momentum. Jiao (角) is most auspicious for business openings, marriages, and new ventures. Ji (箕) governs wealth accumulation and Feng Shui activities. Wei (尾) is favorable for all activities including business, travel, construction, and marriage.

Black Tortoise (玄武) — North — Winter — Water

Mansions 8–14: 斗 (Dou) Dipper · 牛 (Niu) Ox · 女 (Nu) Maiden · 虛 (Xu) Emptiness · 危 (Wei) Danger · 室 (Shi) Camp · 壁 (Bi) Wall. The Black Tortoise governs consolidation, hidden matters, and foundational activities. Shi (室) is favorable for business commencement and renovation starts. Xu (虛) — Emptiness — is the most inauspicious mansion, strongly associated with illness and loss; avoid for any milestone event. Bi (壁) favors scholarly pursuits and education.

White Tiger (白虎) — West — Autumn — Metal

Mansions 15–21: 奎 (Kui) Legs · 威 (Lou) Bond · 胃 (Wei) Stomach · 昂 (Mao) Hairy Head · 畢 (Bi) Net · 筄 (Zi) Beak · 參 (Shen) Three Stars. The White Tiger governs authority, legal matters, and property. Lou (威) is generally favorable for most important activities. Mao (昂, Pleiades) is considered the most inauspicious mansion for any significant undertaking. Bi (畢) is favorable for land-related activities and marriage. Shen (參) is good for most activities except burials and marriage.

Vermilion Bird (朱雀) — South — Summer — Fire

Mansions 22–28: 井 (Jing) Well · 鬼 (Gui) Ghost · 柳 (Liu) Willow · 星 (Xing) Star · 張 (Zhang) Extend · 翼 (Yi) Wings · 軫 (Zhen) Chariot. The Vermilion Bird governs illumination, fame, and cultural activities. Xing (星) is extremely auspicious for marriage and commercial activities; avoid burials. Zhang (張) is very good for wealth-related activities. Gui (鬼) is only favorable for burials and spirit-related rituals. Liu (柳) is generally unfavorable, especially for Feng Shui activities.

Applications across the Five Arts

Date Selection (擇日): The 28 Mansions function as a fine-tuning layer within a multi-system date selection analysis. They do not operate as the primary selection method but refine the choices generated by the Twelve Officers (十二神) and Nine Stars (九星). When multiple candidate dates exist, the mansion quality identifies the optimal day within the set. When all available dates are unfavorable, the 28 Mansions can also identify the least inauspicious option.

Da Liu Ren (大六壬): The 28 Mansions map onto the Twelve Month Generals (十二月將), with each mansion associated with a specific solar period, allowing the Da Liu Ren practitioner to identify the monthly general (月將) governing a divination cast.

Feng Shui Orientation: In the Luopan's outer rings, the 28 Mansions are mapped onto the 365.25° compass. Advanced practitioners determine which mansion governs a specific compass direction at a given site — used in assessing the quality of Dragon vein entry directions and water mouth orientations in the San He tradition. This provides a celestial layer of validation complementing the terrestrial Na Jia and Na Qi analyses.
