The Feng Shui Luopan (風水羅盤逐層解說)

The Luopan (羅盤) is the definitive instrument of classical Feng Shui practice. A professional Luopan may carry up to forty concentric rings, each encoding a distinct analytical layer of Chinese metaphysics. The instrument bridges heaven, earth, and the compass-reader in a single moment of measurement.

Historical Evolution

The Luopan lineage begins with the Si Nan (指南针), the south-pointing spoon of the Warring States period (475-221 BC): a magnetised spoon resting on a square divination plate, the earliest directional instrument in the Chinese tradition. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) this evolved into the Shi Pan (式盤), the cosmological board: a square earth plate (Di Pan) supporting a rotating round heaven plate (Tian Pan). The Shi Pan pattern is the direct forerunner of Flying Star (飛星) configuration charts. Increased maritime activity during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) accelerated development of the magnetic needle (磁針), producing the full Luopan as a precision geomantic instrument combining fixed rings of knowledge with a freely rotating magnetic needle at its centre.

Three Principal Luopan Types

Three standard Luopan types exist in modern practice. The San Yuan Luopan (三元羅盤 / Jiang Pan), named after Grand Master Jiang Dahong (蓣大鸿), is recognised by a single 24 Mountains ring and a prominent 64-Hexagram ring, designed for Xuan Kong Flying Stars and time-based calculations. The San He Luopan (三合羅盤 / Yang Kung Pan), named after Grand Master Yang Yunsong (楊筠松) of the Tang Dynasty, is recognised by three distinct 24 Mountains rings (Earth, Human, and Heaven plates), each offset by 7.5 degrees, designed for landform analysis, San He Water methods, and Dragon tracking. The Zhung He Luopan (綜合羅盤) combines San Yuan and San He features for practitioners of both systems. The most versatile, though the most visually complex instrument available.

The Tian Chi: Heaven Pool at the Centre

At the heart of every Luopan sits the Tian Chi (天池 - Heaven Pool), a magnetised well housing the magnetic needle. The needle must align perfectly above the red centreline at the base of the Heaven Pool, and beneath the Axis Cross nylon threads. Any deviation of even 0.01mm renders the Luopan unreliable. The double dots on the Heaven Pool ring must point to the Rat direction (true North, 0 degrees) while the needle tip points to the Horse direction (South, 180 degrees).

8-Point Selection Criteria

Master practitioners apply eight criteria when selecting a Luopan: (1) Needle quality, must settle precisely on the red centreline with no deviation; (2) Heaven Pool red-line accuracy, double-dot must align to North; (3) Axis Cross precision, crosshairs must bisect the dial at exactly 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees; (4) Heaven Dial clarity, all characters, trigrams, and numbers must be crisp and legible; (5) Square Earth Base with built-in spirit level for accurate wall measurements; (6) Material quality and durability; (7) Needle responsiveness with appropriate damping, smooth but not too loose; (8) Ring completeness appropriate to the practitioner’s chosen school, with all required rings present and accurately printed.

Core Ring Systems

The most fundamental ring is the 24 Mountains (二十四山), dividing the compass into 24 sectors of 15 degrees each, composed of 12 Earthly Branches, 8 Heavenly Stems, and 4 Trigrams. The 64 Hexagram ring (六十四卦) divides the compass into 64 segments of 5.625 degrees each and is the engine of Xuan Kong Da Gua (大卦) analysis, enabling precision down to approximately 1 degree. Advanced rings include the Purple White Script (紫白誾), Water Dragon Formulas (水龍經), 28 Lunar Mansions (二十八宿), 72 Dragons (七十二龍), and 120 Gold Divisions (一百二十金分), each adding precision layers to site assessment.
