Integrating Multiple Date Selection Systems (多系統整合判斷)
Professional date selection (擇日) in Chinese metaphysics is never based on a single system. Instead, practitioners layer multiple evaluation frameworks to arrive at a robust, cross-validated verdict. This module explains the integration methodology, weighting strategies, and conflict resolution approaches used by experienced practitioners.
The Five-Layer Framework
The recommended integration sequence, from broadest filter to finest refinement:
- Layer 1 — Elimination (淘汰層): Remove all absolute avoidance days first. This includes Year Breakers (歲破), Month Breakers (月破), Po (破) officer days, and days with the most severe Shen Sha (受死日, 四絕日 on critical seasonal transitions). These are non-negotiable — no positive factor from another system can override them.
- Layer 2 — Day Officers / Jianchu (建除層): From the remaining candidate days, identify the Yellow Path (黃道) officers and their activity-specific suitability. This layer typically eliminates 40–50% of remaining candidates for any specific activity type.
- Layer 3 — Dong Gong Grading (董公層): Apply Grandmaster Dong's monthly verdicts to the surviving candidates. Days rated as 'Superior' or 'Secondary' by Dong Gong are preferred. Days rated as 'Avoid' by Dong Gong are eliminated unless the Day Officer is exceptionally strong (成 or 開).
- Layer 4 — XKDG Hexagram Analysis (玄空大卦層): For dates that pass Layers 1–3, apply the Xuan Kong Da Gua analysis. Map the Four Pillars to hexagrams and evaluate Gua Qi / Gua Yun relationships. Prioritize dates with He Shi (合十) or Yi Gua Chun Qing (一卦純清) patterns. When a mountain direction is known (for Feng Shui-related date selection), evaluate the Sheng Ru / Ke Chu flow against the mountain's hexagram element.
- Layer 5 — Lunar Mansions and Shen Sha Refinement (宿煞層): The final refinement layer considers the 28 Lunar Mansions for activity-specific quality and aggregates all remaining Shen Sha (both auspicious and inauspicious) for a final score adjustment. Auspicious Shen Sha like Tian De (天德), Yue De (月德), and Tian She (天赦) can elevate a borderline day to an acceptable choice.
Weighting Strategy
Not all layers carry equal weight. The recommended weighting for the composite score:
| Layer | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Day Officer (Jianchu) | 35% | Foundational — determines the basic quality and activity suitability |
| Dong Gong | 25% | Comprehensive monthly verdicts with specific activity guidance |
| XKDG | 20% | Hexagram-level analysis with mountain integration capability |
| Shen Sha | 12% | Overlay of celestial influences, can be decisive for borderline days |
| Lunar Mansion | 8% | Secondary reference, provides activity-specific nuance |
Conflict Resolution
When systems disagree, apply these rules:
- Hard vetoes always win: If any system flags a day as an absolute avoidance (Year Breaker, Three Killings direction, Po day), the day is rejected regardless of positive indicators from other systems.
- Two-system agreement beats one-system excellence: A day rated 'Good' by both Jianchu and Dong Gong is more reliable than a day rated 'Excellent' by one system but 'Avoid' by another.
- XKDG defers to Officer+Dong Gong consensus: XKDG operates on a different axis (hexagram numerology vs. calendar science), so it serves as a refinement, not an override. An XKDG '上吉' cannot rescue a day that both Jianchu and Dong Gong reject.
- Shen Sha tiebreaker: When two candidate days are otherwise equal, the one with more auspicious Shen Sha (especially Tian De or Tian She) is preferred.
Practical Workflow
For a typical date selection engagement (e.g., wedding, business opening):
- Define the search window (typically 1–3 months).
- Run Layer 1 elimination across all days in the window.
- Apply the activity-specific Jianchu filter (Layer 2).
- Score surviving days with Dong Gong (Layer 3) and sort by composite score.
- Take the top 5–10 candidates and run XKDG analysis (Layer 4).
- Final selection considers Shen Sha, Mansions (Layer 5), and the client's personal BaZi compatibility.
The Tong Shu calendar in this platform automates Layers 1–5, presenting a composite score that integrates all systems. The XKDG tab provides detailed hexagram analysis for dates that warrant deeper investigation.
