BaZi — Historical Development

八字命理歷史沿革

Historical Development of BaZi (八字命理歷史)

BaZi's history spans over a thousand years, evolving from primitive year-based shamanic astrology to a sophisticated analytical system based on the Day Master.

Tang Dynasty Origins (618–907 CE)

The earliest form of Chinese destiny analysis used the Year Pillar as the primary indicator. Li Xu Zhong introduced the concept of Month Pillar analysis, but the system was still far from modern BaZi.

Song Dynasty Revolution: Xu Ziping (960–1279 CE)

The revolutionary breakthrough came with Xu Ziping (徐子平), who shifted the analytical focus to the Day Stem as the Self. This was the founding moment of the "Zi Ping" (子平) system — the direct ancestor of all modern BaZi traditions. The text Yuan Hai Zi Ping documents this transition.

Ming Dynasty Systematization

The Ming Dynasty saw the great compilations: San Ming Tong Hui (三命通會) by Wan Min Ying encyclopedically preserved classical knowledge, while Shen Feng Tong Kao (神峰通考) by Zhang Nan introduced critical reform and the Illness-Medicine theory.

Qing Dynasty Refinement

Shen Xiao Zhan's Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真詮) standardized the Structure-Useful God system. Ren Tiejiao's annotations of Di Tian Sui deepened philosophical analysis. The tradition reached theoretical maturity.

20th Century Schools

The 20th century produced three major schools: the classical text-based school (following Zi Ping Zhen Quan), the Wuxing Pai (五行派) precision school emphasizing flow analysis, and the Mangpai (盲派) oral-transmission school emphasizing efficiency and physical image reading.
