Five Arts — 五術

Mountain (Shan)

山術

Cultivation, meditation, and the refinement of spirit through Fa practice.

Overview

概述

Mountain Art (山術, Shan Shu) encompasses the inner cultivation disciplines of the Chinese classical tradition. It is the art of developing the practitioner themselves — body, mind, and spirit — through meditation, breathing exercises (qigong), physical cultivation, and ritual Fa practice. Within the Liuren Fajiao lineage, Shan is foundational: all ritual work rests on a cultivated practitioner.

Key Concepts

Mountain Art centres on three pillars: Jing (精, Essence), Qi (氣, Vital Breath), and Shen (神, Spirit). Through structured practice, the practitioner refines Jing into Qi, and Qi into Shen — the classic alchemical progression of internal cultivation. Hand Seals (手印) are integral to this process, channelling intention and Qi in ritual contexts. Stillness (靜, Jing) is cultivated alongside movement; the Altar (法壇) serves as the sacred space for formal practice.

Practice Methods

Core methods include seated meditation (禪坐), standing post practice (站樁), breath regulation (調息), mantra recitation (持咒), and visualisation (觀想). Advanced practitioners integrate these with the ritual Fa methods of the Liuren Fajiao — Hand Seals, Fa Water, and altar rites — to achieve a unified practice that is simultaneously internal and ritual.
