Star 1 White — Tan Lang (Greedy Wolf)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 1 White Water occupies the true position of the Kan trigram. When the Greedy Wolf star is timely, it produces brilliant scholars who achieve fame through the imperial examinations, succeed in youth, and possess refined elegance.

When timely (得令): Literary brilliance that surpasses the age, distinguished scholarly fame, promotion of officials and nobility, romantic fortune.

When untimely (失令): Ear ailments and kidney deficiency, drifting and alcoholism, romantic scandals that drain wealth, lustful behaviour that ruins the household.

Key Concepts

(Tān Láng)
Greedy Wolf — the name derives from the Ursa Major (北斗) star association. In timely conditions it represents insatiable hunger for knowledge; untimely, it becomes unbridled desire.
(Kǎn Guà)
The Kan trigram — Water trapped between two Earth lines (☵). It represents danger, depth, hidden flow, and the Middle Son. Its virtue is wisdom through adversity.
(Táo Huā)
Peach Blossom — the romantic and charismatic quality of Star 1. When timely it attracts beneficial relationships; when untimely it becomes scandalous affairs and sexual excess.
催官 (Cuī Guān)
Promotion of Officials — Star 1's capacity to accelerate career advancement and scholarly recognition when properly activated by mountain and water formations.

Commentary 評注

Star 1 White is the foundation of the Purple-White system. As the sole Water star among the nine, it governs intelligence, literary ability, and the subtle flow of opportunities. The Zi Bai Jue emphasises that its nature is fundamentally about flow and connection — Water seeks its own level and finds passage through the smallest openings. This is why Star 1 governs both scholarly networking and romantic connections.

The dual nature of the Peach Blossom effect is critical to understand. In timely periods, Star 1's romantic quality manifests as personal charisma, social grace, and the ability to attract influential patrons. In untimely periods, the same quality degenerates into lustful behaviour, extramarital affairs, and financial ruin through romantic entanglements. The practitioner must assess the period context before declaring Star 1 auspicious or inauspicious.

In classical Xuan Kong practice, Star 1 at the sitting position (山星) with good landform support indicates intelligent offspring, while Star 1 at the facing position (向星) with water presence indicates career advancement through literary or intellectual merit. The combination of Stars 1 and 4 at the same palace is the celebrated "Literary Stars Meeting" (一四同宮), considered the most powerful formation for academic achievement.

Star 2 Black — Ju Men (Giant Gate)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 2 Black Earth occupies the true position of the Kun trigram. When the Giant Gate star is timely, it produces abundant real estate, flourishing descendants, and a wise mother who governs the household.

When timely (得令): Prosperous real estate holdings, abundant descendants, honest and frugal household management, a loving mother with filial children.

When untimely (失令): Chronic illness, a widow left at the door, abdominal and stomach ailments, excessive Yin energy.

Key Concepts

(Jù Mén)
Giant Gate — named for its capacity to block or admit fortune, like a massive gate. In timely periods it admits wealth; untimely, it blocks vitality and admits illness.
(Kūn Guà)
The Kun trigram — three broken Yin lines (☷). It represents the receptive Earth, the Mother, devotion, and nurturing. Its shadow is stagnation and excessive passivity.
病符 (Bìng Fú)
Illness Talisman — Star 2's untimely designation. In modern Flying Star practice, Star 2 is treated as the primary illness star requiring metal cures to exhaust its Earth energy.
(Yīn Qì)
Yin Energy — the heavy, dark, stagnant quality that accumulates when Star 2 is untimely, associated with depression, lethargy, and chronic health conditions.

Commentary 評注

Star 2 Black is among the most misunderstood stars in popular Feng Shui. Modern practitioners reflexively treat it as purely negative, but the Zi Bai Jue makes clear that in timely periods, Star 2 is one of the most powerful wealth and fertility stars. During Periods 2 and 3, Star 2 was the reigning or newly-retired star, and properties with strong Star 2 formations produced large, prosperous families with extensive land holdings.

The Kun trigram association is key to understanding Star 2's nature. Kun is the Mother — the receptive, nurturing, Earth-based energy that grows things slowly but steadily. When timely, this manifests as real estate accumulation, family growth, and stable domestic prosperity. When untimely, the same receptive quality becomes a magnet for illness, as the "Giant Gate" now admits disease Qi rather than prosperity Qi.

In the current Period 9, Star 2 is deeply untimely and functions as the primary illness star. Classical remedies involve placing metal objects (coins, wind chimes, metal Wu Lou gourds) in the palace where Star 2 appears, using the Metal-produces-Water cycle to exhaust Earth energy. However, practitioners should remember that even in untimely periods, Star 2 retains its motherly quality — it is especially harmful to women's health and fertility.

The combination of Stars 2 and 5 at the same palace is the feared "Two-Five Conjunction" (二五交加), considered the most dangerous illness combination in all of Flying Star Feng Shui.

Star 3 Jade — Lu Cun (Wealth Preserved)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 3 Jade Wood occupies the true position of the Zhen trigram. When the Wealth Preserved star is timely, it produces resourceful strategists, household founders, and a greatly honoured eldest son.

When timely (得令): Prospers the eldest son, produces resourceful strategists, confers military nobility, outstanding oratory skill, and the founding of family enterprises.

When untimely (失令): Gossip and disputes, lawsuits and litigation, burglary and theft, disability and injury through punishment.

Key Concepts

(Lù Cún)
Wealth Preserved — the star that stores and guards wealth. In timely conditions it builds fortunes through enterprise; untimely, it becomes the cause of wealth loss through litigation and theft.
(Zhèn Guà)
The Zhen trigram — a single Yang line beneath two Yin lines (☳). It represents Thunder, sudden movement, the Eldest Son, and initiative. Its shadow is impulsiveness and aggression.
(Shì Fēi Xīng)
Disputes Star — Star 3's untimely designation. It is the primary cause of arguments, slander, gossip, and legal battles in Flying Star analysis.
官非 (Guān Fēi)
Official Disputes — lawsuits, legal penalties, and confrontations with authorities, triggered when Star 3 is untimely and activated by improper forms or movement.

Commentary 評注

Star 3 Jade embodies the explosive, initiating quality of the Zhen trigram — Thunder. When timely, this energy propels the eldest son to military distinction, entrepreneurial success, and masterful public speaking. The character of Star 3 is fundamentally about assertive action: it either builds or destroys depending on the period context.

In its untimely state, Star 3 is one of the most troublesome stars in daily Feng Shui practice. Its Wood energy, lacking proper seasonal support, manifests as aggressive verbal energy — quarrels between family members, arguments with neighbours, slander, gossip, and ultimately lawsuits. The classical texts note that Star 3 particularly afflicts the mouth and throat, which is consistent with its speech-related trouble.

The recommended remedy for untimely Star 3 is Fire, which exhausts Wood energy. Red decorations, bright lighting, and candles in the affected palace are traditional cures. Some practitioners also use the Still Water method — placing still water to calm the Wood energy — though this is debated, as Water also feeds Wood.

The combination of Stars 3 and 2 produces the feared "Fighting Bull Sha" (鬥牛煞) — Wood attacking Earth — which manifests as constant domestic arguments and legal entanglements.

Star 4 Green — Wen Qu (Literary Curve)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 4 Green Wood occupies the true position of the Xun trigram. When the Literary Curve star is timely, it produces literary excellence, scholarly achievement surpassing peers, and flourishing romantic fortune.

When timely (得令): Names inscribed on the golden list of examination success, literary brilliance that surpasses the age, quick and nimble intellect, prosperity of the eldest daughter.

When untimely (失令): Licentious and dissolute behaviour, suicide by hanging, madness and mental illness, drifting without stability.

Key Concepts

(Wén Qū)
Literary Curve — the star of literary talent and artistic sensibility. Its energy bends and flows like elegant calligraphy, producing refinement when timely and dissipation when untimely.
(Xùn Guà)
The Xun trigram — a broken Yin line beneath two Yang lines (☴). It represents Wind, gentle penetration, the Eldest Daughter, and the ability to spread influence widely. Its shadow is indecisiveness and susceptibility.
(Yī Sì Tóng Gōng)
Stars 1 and 4 in the Same Palace — the most celebrated academic formation in Flying Star Feng Shui. Water nourishes Wood, producing exceptional scholarly achievement and examination success.
(Wén Chāng)
Literary Prosperity — Star 4 is often called the Wen Chang star in popular practice. Activating Star 4's palace is a common method for enhancing children's academic performance.

Commentary 評注

Star 4 Green is the quintessential star of scholarly achievement and artistic refinement. As Yin Wood governed by the Xun (Wind) trigram, it possesses a gentle, penetrating quality that differs markedly from Star 3's explosive Thunder energy. Where Star 3 builds enterprises through forceful action, Star 4 achieves distinction through intellectual subtlety, literary elegance, and the quiet accumulation of cultural capital.

The Zi Bai Jue's treatment of Star 4 reveals the classical text's unflinching realism. The same refined sensibility that produces great literature also produces, when untimely, a dangerous susceptibility to emotional excess. The untimely effects listed — licentiousness, suicide, madness — represent the dark side of the artistic temperament when it loses its structural support. This is consistent with the Xun trigram's nature: Wind without direction becomes a destructive gale.

(Stars 1 and 4 in the Same Palace) formation deserves special attention. When Water Star 1 nourishes Wood Star 4, the result is the most powerful academic formation in all of Flying Star Feng Shui. Classical texts state: "一四同宮,準發科名" — when 1 and 4 share a palace, scholarly fame is certain. Many practitioners place study desks in the palace where this combination occurs.

In Period 9, Star 4 alone is untimely, but its combination with the future prosperity Star 1 can still be activated for academic benefit, particularly for the eldest daughter of the household.

Star 5 Yellow — Lian Zhen (Incorruptible)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 5 Yellow Earth dwells at the center with no fixed position. Lian Zhen is a virulent poison — encounter it and calamity is certain. When timely, it holds the imperial throne, with all nations paying tribute.

When timely (得令): Imperial majesty, commanding absolute obedience, holding great power, inspiring awe in all four directions.

When untimely (失令): Death and terminal illness, widespread plague, family destruction and personal ruin, continuous catastrophic disasters.

Key Concepts

(Lián Zhēn)
Incorruptible — paradoxically named, as its incorruptible nature means it cannot be negotiated with or softened. When untimely, its judgement is absolute and merciless.
(Wǔ Huáng Dà Shā)
The Great Five Yellow Sha — the most dangerous affliction in Flying Star Feng Shui. Its activation through ground disturbance, noise, or fire in its palace triggers catastrophic events.
(Zhōng Gōng)
The Central Palace — Star 5's natural home. It belongs to no trigram and no fixed direction, giving it an unpredictable, all-pervading quality that makes it especially dangerous.
The Two-Five Conjunction — when Stars 2 and 5 appear in the same palace, it produces the most lethal illness combination. Classical texts warn this combination causes death in the family.
(Wù Jǐ Dà Shā)
The Wu-Ji Great Sha — Star 5 corresponds to both Wu (戊, Yang Earth) and Ji (己, Yin Earth) Heavenly Stems, reinforcing its dual and extreme nature.

Commentary 評注

Star 5 Yellow is the emperor of the nine stars — and like all emperors, it is either the source of supreme order or catastrophic tyranny. The Zi Bai Jue's famous line "廉貞毒藥,逢之必凶" (Lian Zhen is a virulent poison — encounter it and calamity is certain) applies specifically to its untimely state, which encompasses all periods except Period 5 itself. Since Period 5 last ran from 1944 to 1963 and will not recur until 2124, Star 5 is effectively always untimely in any living practitioner's career.

The danger of Star 5 lies in its lack of a fixed trigram and direction. The other eight stars each have a home palace and associated trigram qualities that give them a predictable character. Star 5, dwelling at the Center, partakes of all directions and all elements simultaneously. When it flies to a palace, it brings an overwhelming, undifferentiated Earth energy that smothers the natural Qi flow of that sector.

Classical remedies for Star 5 are exclusively Metal-based. Heavy brass or copper objects, six-rod metal wind chimes, and metal Wu Lou (gourd) containers placed in the affected palace use the Earth-generates-Metal cycle to drain Star 5's excess energy. Under no circumstances should Fire objects (red decorations, candles, bright lighting) be placed where Star 5 resides, as Fire generates Earth and amplifies the danger.

The most critical practical rule: never break ground, renovate, or create sustained noise in the palace occupied by the annual or monthly Five Yellow. Construction or excavation in this sector is the single most common trigger for Five Yellow disasters in classical case studies.

Star 6 White — Wu Qu (Military Curve)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 6 White Metal occupies the true position of the Qian trigram. When the Military Curve star is timely, it produces military nobility and powerful authority, far-reaching fame, and a firm and upright character.

When timely (得令): Military generals and powerful officials, conspicuous authority and prestige, wealth obtained from afar, the galloping Post Horse of travel and promotion.

When untimely (失令): Loneliness and widowhood with injury to the father, head ailments, lawsuits and punishment injuries, solitary isolation.

Key Concepts

Military Curve — the star of martial discipline, authority, and strategic power. Its energy is sharp, decisive, and directional, contrasting with Star 4's literary softness.
(Qián Guà)
The Qian trigram — three unbroken Yang lines (☰). It represents Heaven, the Father, creative power, and supreme authority. Its shadow is rigidity and overbearing dominance.
驛馬 (Yì Mǎ)
Post Horse — Star 6's association with travel, relocation, and advancement through geographic movement. Timely Star 6 promotes international business and overseas fortune.
(Wǔ Guì)
Military Nobility — distinction earned through martial or executive authority, as opposed to the literary nobility (文貴) of Stars 1 and 4.

Commentary 評注

Star 6 White is the star of the patriarch, the general, and the executive. Governed by the Qian trigram — three solid Yang lines representing Heaven itself — it embodies authority, discipline, and decisive action. Where Star 1 achieves through scholarly brilliance and Star 4 through literary refinement, Star 6 achieves through sheer force of command and organizational power.

The Metal element association gives Star 6 a cutting, discerning quality. In timely periods, this manifests as clear-headed decision-making, the ability to command respect, and wealth acquired through disciplined enterprise or from distant locations (the Post Horse quality). In untimely periods, the same sharp Metal energy turns inward, producing isolation, harsh self-criticism, and physical ailments of the head, lungs, and bones.

The Zi Bai Jue notes that Star 6 especially affects the patriarch of the household. When it appears untimely at the sitting position, the father's health and authority are undermined. When timely at the facing with water support, it brings wealth from overseas or through governmental/military connections.

In Period 9 practice, Star 6 is a retreating star — no longer at its peak but not yet deeply untimely. It can still be activated for structured, disciplined endeavours and is particularly useful for households headed by strong patriarchal figures in administrative or military careers.

Star 7 Red — Po Jun (Army Breaker)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 7 Red Metal occupies the true position of the Dui trigram. When the Army Breaker star is timely, it produces outstanding oratory, wealth through verbal skill, and a flourishing age of song and dance.

When timely (得令): Wealth through eloquence, performing arts and public speaking, windfall fortune, the youngest daughter is favoured.

When untimely (失令): Words bring calamity, sword flashes and knife wounds, fire and burglary, broken and damaged forms.

Key Concepts

(Pò Jūn)
Army Breaker — the star that shatters existing structures. When timely, it breaks through barriers to create new wealth; untimely, it breaks down security and order.
(Duì Guà)
The Dui trigram — a broken Yin line atop two Yang lines (☱). It represents the Lake, the Mouth, the Youngest Daughter, joy, and verbal expression. Its shadow is gossip, manipulation, and cutting speech.
(Yǐ Kǒu Shēng Cái)
Generating Wealth Through the Mouth — Star 7's timely signature. It governs all professions that produce income through speech: lawyers, singers, salespeople, broadcasters, teachers.
(Dào Zéi Xīng)
Robbery Star — Star 7's untimely designation in the current Period 9. It is the primary indicator of theft, burglary, fraud, and competitive loss.

Commentary 評注

Star 7 Red presents one of the most dramatic timely-to-untimely transformations in the nine-star system. During its ruling Period 7 (1984–2003), it was the reigning prosperity star — and indeed, those two decades saw the explosive global growth of entertainment, telecommunications, and verbal-profession wealth (talk shows, mobile phones, internet communication). Now in Period 9, it has become the robbery star, and the same verbal energy manifests as fraud, deception, and competitive undermining.

The Dui trigram's association with the Mouth is the key to understanding Star 7. Every manifestation — timely or untimely — relates to what comes out of or goes into the mouth: speech, song, food, breathing. When timely, the mouth creates; when untimely, the mouth destroys. This extends to the physical body: dental problems, respiratory illness, and throat conditions all fall under Star 7's domain.

In Period 9 practice, Star 7 requires careful management. Water features placed in Star 7 palaces exhaust its Metal energy through the Metal-generates-Water cycle. Some practitioners also use Earth to control Water and thus indirectly weaken the star's destructive potential. The critical practical rule is: do not place anything sharp, metallic, or red in a palace where Star 7 is untimely, as this amplifies its robbery and injury potential.

The combination of Stars 7 and 9 produces the "Fire Burning Heaven's Gate" (火燒天門) analogy when appearing in the Northwest — Fire melting Metal with particularly destructive consequences for the patriarch.

Star 8 White — Zuo Fu (Left Assistant)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 8 White Earth occupies the true position of the Gen trigram. When the Left Assistant star is timely, it greatly prospers both wealth and descendants, achieves the double fullness of riches and nobility, and the youngest son is brilliant.

When timely (得令): Wealthiest in the region, extensive real estate holdings, abundantly flourishing descendants, the youngest son achieves examination success.

When untimely (失令): Injury to young children, muscle and bone pain, finger and hand injuries, depression and self-isolation.

Key Concepts

(Zuǒ Fǔ)
Left Assistant — the loyal minister who supports the emperor from the left. Star 8 achieves through steady, reliable service rather than flashy brilliance.
(Gèn Guà)
The Gen trigram — a single Yang line above two Yin lines (☶). It represents the Mountain, stillness, meditation, the Youngest Son, and patient accumulation. Its shadow is stubbornness and immobility.
(Wàng Cái Wàng Dīng)
Prospering Both Wealth and Descendants — Star 8's supreme timely quality. It is the only star that the classical texts credit with simultaneous and equal prosperity in both material wealth and human lineage.
(Dāng Lìng Wàng Xīng)
Reigning Prosperity Star — the star that matches the current twenty-year period number. In Period 8 (2004–2023), Star 8 was this star; in Period 9, Star 9 takes this role.

Commentary 評注

Star 8 White is the supreme wealth star in modern Flying Star practice. Having just concluded its twenty-year reign (Period 8, 2004–2023), it remains the most powerful secondary prosperity star in Period 9. The Zi Bai Jue's line "左輔星得令,大旺財丁" is perhaps the most frequently cited verse in all of contemporary Feng Shui literature, as it defines the star that governed global property markets for two decades.

The Gen trigram's Mountain quality gives Star 8 its distinctive character: patient, immovable accumulation. Unlike the quick speculative gains of Star 7 or the scholarly fortune of Star 1, Star 8 wealth builds slowly and solidly through real estate, tangible assets, and multigenerational family enterprises. The Mountain does not move — and Star 8 wealth, once established, is remarkably stable.

In Period 9, Star 8 retains strong residual energy. Properties purchased or built during Period 8 with good Star 8 formations continue to prosper, though new constructions should prioritise Star 9 formations. The classical rule states that the just-retreated star (剛退旺星) remains auspicious for one full period after its reign — meaning Star 8 will support wealth until approximately 2043.

Star 8 especially favours the youngest son of the family. When appearing as a timely mountain star with good landform backing, it indicates a brilliant youngest son who will achieve academic and professional distinction. This association with the Gen trigram's family member is consistent across all classical Xuan Kong texts.

Star 9 Purple — You Bi (Right Assistant)

Original Text

Translation 譯文

Star 9 Purple Fire occupies the true position of the Li trigram. The Right Assistant star brings joyous celebration, presiding over weddings and childbirth, happy events arriving at the door, and flourishing civilisation.

When timely (得令): Joyous weddings, childbirth and new family members, a golden age of civilisation and culture, the middle daughter prospers.

When untimely (失令): Eye diseases and heart conditions, fire disasters and blood calamities, vomiting blood and epilepsy, catastrophic conflagrations.

Key Concepts

(Yòu Bì)
Right Assistant — the complementary minister who supports from the right, completing the Left-Right pair with Star 8. Together they form the Twin Assistants that uphold celestial order.
(Lí Guà)
The Li trigram — a broken Yin line between two Yang lines (☲). It represents Fire, brilliance, beauty, the Middle Daughter, and illumination. Its shadow is vanity, impulsiveness, and destructive conflagration.
(Jí Qìng Xīng)
Celebration Star — Star 9's primary designation. It governs all joyous events: weddings, births, promotions, festivals, and achievements.
(Dāng Lìng Wàng Xīng)
Current Reigning Star — Star 9 holds this title for the entire Period 9 (2024–2043). All Flying Star assessments during this period must prioritise Star 9 as the primary prosperity activator.
(Lí Huǒ Wén Míng)
Li Fire Civilisation — the cultural character of Period 9: technology, digital innovation, artificial intelligence, visual media, beauty industries, and the primacy of light-based technologies.

Commentary 評注

Star 9 Purple is the current reigning prosperity star of Period 9 (2024–2043), making this chapter the most practically relevant section of the Zi Bai Jue for contemporary practitioners. The text's line "右弼星吉慶,主嫁娶添丁" captures Star 9's essential nature: it is the star of joyous celebration and new beginnings.

The Li trigram's Fire element gives Period 9 its distinctive civilisational character. Classical texts predict that Li Fire periods produce cultural brilliance, technological innovation, and the ascendancy of visual and light-based industries. The period from 2024 to 2043 is expected to see the dominance of AI, digital media, solar energy, and beauty/fashion industries — all Fire-related domains.

In practical Feng Shui, Star 9 at the facing position (向星) with visible water is the most powerful wealth formation of the current period. Star 9 at the sitting position (山星) with mountain backing produces healthy, celebrated descendants — particularly the middle daughter. The combination of Stars 9 and 8 is the celebrated "Current and Recent Prosperity Meeting" (當旺近旺), considered the best overall combination for Period 9.

The Middle Daughter association means that Period 9 is a time of rising feminine influence. Female leaders, entrepreneurs, and cultural figures are predicted to achieve unprecedented prominence during this period. This is consistent with the Li trigram's structure: two Yang lines protecting a central Yin line, representing inner receptivity shielded by outer brilliance.

Parent-String Three-Type Trigrams (父母三般卦): such as 1-4-7, 2-5-8, 3-6-9 — selected at intervals of three — this is the marvellous application of the Parent-String Three-Type.

In all mountain and facing flying star charts: Sum-to-Ten is the highest auspiciousness, Three-Type Trigrams are next, and Generating-In or Controlling-In come after that.

Key Concepts

(Hé Shí)
Sum-to-Ten — when the mountain star and facing star of a palace add up to 10, it creates the most auspicious combination. The pairs are: 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6. Star 5 combines with itself (5+5=10) only in special circumstances.
(Lián Zhū Sān Bān Guà)
Linked Pearl Three-Type Trigrams — when the three numbers appearing in a chart's mountain stars, facing stars, or period stars form a consecutive sequence (1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9). This produces a smooth, harmonious energy flow.
(Fù Mǔ Sān Bān Guà)
Parent-String Three-Type Trigrams — when the three numbers form a set separated by intervals of three (1-4-7, 2-5-8, 3-6-9). This is considered even more powerful than Linked Pearl and represents the deep structural harmony of the Luo Shu.
(Shēng Rù Kè Rù)
Generating-In and Controlling-In — when a visiting star generates or controls the palace's native element. Generating-In (being nourished) is favourable; Controlling-In (being controlled) can be managed.
(Shēng Chū Kè Chū)
Generating-Out and Controlling-Out — when the palace's native element generates or controls the visiting star. Generating-Out (being drained) is unfavourable; Controlling-Out (dominating the visitor) wastes the host's energy.
(Shàng Shān Xià Shuǐ)
Mountain Star Goes Up the Mountain, Water Star Goes Down to Water — the ideal configuration where the mountain star has landform backing (mountain/wall behind) and the water star has water in front. Reversal of this pattern is called Double-Facing-Sitting-Reversal

Commentary 評注

The Lower Section of the Zi Bai Jue shifts from individual star analysis to the combinatory logic that is the true heart of Xuan Kong Flying Star practice. A single star's quality — timely or untimely — provides the foundation, but it is the interaction between stars in each palace that determines the specific events and their timing.

The hierarchy of auspicious patterns is critically important: Sum-to-Ten (合十) stands supreme, followed by Three-Type Trigrams, followed by generating/controlling relationships. This hierarchy reflects a deep mathematical truth of the Luo Shu: Sum-to-Ten patterns create perfect balance (each pair balances around the central number 5), while Three-Type Trigrams create structural completeness (each set covers one star from each Yuan).

The Parent-String Three-Type Trigrams (父母三般卦) deserve special attention from advanced practitioners. The sets 1-4-7, 2-5-8, and 3-6-9 each contain one star from the Upper Yuan (Periods 1-3), one from the Middle Yuan (Periods 4-6), and one from the Lower Yuan (Periods 7-9). This cross-Yuan coverage means that a chart exhibiting Parent-String harmony maintains its auspicious quality across multiple twenty-year periods — a rare and highly prized characteristic.

For Period 9 practice, the most important combinations to seek are: Stars 8 and 9 together (current and recent prosperity), Stars 9 and 1 together (current and future prosperity), and the Sum-to-Ten pair of 1 and 9. The combinations to avoid most urgently are: 2-5 (illness/death), 2-3 (quarrels), and any palace where Star 5 is activated by ground disturbance.
