卦辭
小過:亨,利貞,可小事,不可大事。飛鳥遺之音,不宜上宜下,大吉。
Preponderance of the Small. Success. Perseverance furthers. Small things may be done; great things should not be done. The flying bird brings the message: It is not well to strive upward, it is well to remain below. Great good fortune.

象曰:山上有雷,小過;君子以行過乎恭,喪過乎哀,用過乎儉。
Thunder on the mountain: the image of Preponderance of the Small. Thus in his conduct the superior man gives preponderance to reverence. In bereavement he gives preponderance to grief. In his expenditures he gives preponderance to thrift.
Interpretation

小過卦象徵小有過越。雷在山上,小有震動。應謙恭節儉,小事可為,大事不宜。
Small exceeding. Thunder on mountain, slight tremor. Should be humble and frugal, small matters permissible, great undertakings inappropriate.

Six at the beginning
初六
飛鳥以凶。
The bird meets with misfortune through flying.
飛鳥因飛翔遭凶。初即過越妄動,必招禍患。
Flying bird meets misfortune through flight. Exceeding and acting rashly at start, inevitably brings disaster.
Six in the second place
六二
過其祖,遇其妣,不及其君,遇其臣,無咎。
She passes by her ancestor and meets her ancestress. He does not reach his prince and meets his official. No blame.
越過其祖父,遇到其祖母,未及其君主,遇到其臣下,無咎。得中正守分際,恰到好處。
Passing grandfather meeting grandmother, not reaching lord meeting minister, no blame. Attaining balance keeping boundaries, just right.
Nine in the third place
九三
弗過防之,從或戕之,凶。
If one is not extremely careful, somebody may come up from behind and strike him. Misfortune.
不過分防備,隨從或會傷害他,凶。不夠謹慎必遭暗算。
Not excessively guarding, followers may harm him, misfortune. Insufficient caution inevitably brings ambush.
Nine in the fourth place
九四
無咎,弗過遇之。往厲必戒,勿用永貞。
No blame. He meets him without passing by. Going brings danger. One must be on guard. Do not act. Be constantly persevering.
無咎,不過越地相遇。前往危險必須警戒,不要長久固執。適可而止,不可過度。
No blame, meeting without exceeding. Going dangerous must be cautious, don't persist stubbornly. Stop appropriately, not excessively.
Six in the fifth place
六五
密雲不雨,自我西郊,公弋取彼在穴。
Dense clouds, no rain from our western region. The prince shoots and hits him who is in the cave.
密雲不雨,從我西郊來,公侯射取那在洞穴中的。時機未到,積蓄力量,終能成功。
Dense clouds no rain, from our western suburbs, duke shoots and catches that in cave. Time not yet come, accumulating strength, finally succeeds.
Six at the top
上六
弗遇過之,飛鳥離之,凶,是謂災眚。
He passes him by, not meeting him. The flying bird leaves him. Misfortune. This means bad luck and injury.
不相遇而超越,飛鳥離去,凶,這叫做災禍過失。過度必招災,飛得太高必墜落。
Not meeting yet exceeding, flying bird departs, misfortune, this is called disaster. Excess brings calamity, flying too high inevitably falls.
