Judgment

卦辭

困:亨,貞,大人吉,無咎,有言不信。

Oppression. Success. Perseverance. The great man brings about good fortune. No blame. When one has something to say, it is not believed.

象傳

象曰:澤無水,困;君子以致命遂志。

There is no water in the lake: the image of Exhaustion. Thus the superior man stakes his life on following his will.


Interpretation

詮釋

困卦象徵困厄與窮困。澤無水,資源耗盡。但君子應堅守志向,窮且益堅。

Oppression and hardship. Lake without water, resources exhausted. But the noble should maintain aspirations, growing stronger in adversity.

Six at the beginning

初六

臀困於株木,入於幽谷,三歲不覿。

One sits oppressed under a bare tree and strays into a gloomy valley. For three years one sees nothing.

臀部困於枯木,進入幽暗山谷,三年不見光明。陷入深度困境,長期難以脫身。

Buttocks oppressed by dead tree, entering dark valley, three years without seeing light. Deep in adversity, difficult to escape for long time.

Nine in the second place

九二

困於酒食,朱紱方來,利用享祀,征凶,無咎。

One is oppressed while at meat and drink. The man with the scarlet knee bands is just coming. It furthers one to offer sacrifice. To set forth brings misfortune. No blame.

困於酒食之中,穿朱服的官員來訪,利於祭祀,前進則凶,無咎。物質充足但受困,安守本分為宜。

Oppressed amid food and drink, official in scarlet robes visits, benefits sacrifice, advancing brings misfortune, no blame. Material abundance but trapped, better to stay in place.

Six in the third place

六三

困於石,據於蒺蔾,入於其宮,不見其妻,凶。

A man permits himself to be oppressed by stone, and leans on thorns and thistles. He enters his house and does not see his wife. Misfortune.

困於石頭,倚靠荊棘,進入家中卻不見妻子,凶。處境艱難,進退失據,家庭不和。

Oppressed by stone, leaning on thorns, entering home not seeing wife, misfortune. Difficult situation, losing bearings, family discord.

Nine in the fourth place

九四

來徐徐,困於金車,吝,有終。

He comes very quietly, oppressed in a golden carriage. Humiliation, but the end is reached.

來得很慢,困於金車,艱難,但有終結。雖行動遲緩受困,但終能達成目標。

Coming very slowly, oppressed in golden carriage, difficult, but has ending. Though moving slowly and oppressed, ultimately can achieve goal.

Nine in the fifth place

九五

劓刖,困於赤紱,乃徐有說,利用祭祀。

His nose and feet are cut off. Oppression at the hands of the man with the purple knee bands. Joy comes softly. It furthers one to make offerings and libations.

遭受刑罰,困於穿紅袍的權貴,漸漸有轉機,利於祭祀。身處困境但居尊位,終獲解脫。

Suffering punishment, oppressed by powerful in red robes, gradually turning around, benefits sacrifice. In adversity but high position, ultimately freed.

Six at the top

上六

困於葛藟,於臲卼,曰動悔。有悔,征吉。

He is oppressed by creeping vines. He moves uncertainly and says, 'Movement brings remorse.' If one feels remorse over this and makes a start, good fortune comes.

困於藤蔓纏繞,搖搖欲墜,說行動會後悔。有悔意則前進吉。困極思變,奮起則吉。

Oppressed by entangling vines, tottering, says movement brings regret. Having regret then advancing brings fortune. Extreme adversity inspires change, rising up brings fortune.
