About this Text

The 36 Stratagems (三十六計) is a compilation of Chinese strategic proverbs drawn from centuries of military history, statecraft, and Daoist philosophy. Organised in six categories — Winning, Allied-Attack, Attack, Chaos, Proximate-Combat, and Desperate stratagems — each stratagem encodes a pattern of strategic action applicable from battlefield to boardroom to metaphysical practice. The text's root in I Ching imagery (Xu-Shi, Yi-Zheng-Qi, Yin-Yang reversal) makes it a natural companion to Five Arts strategic thinking.

Each stratagem in this collection includes an application note connecting it to Chinese metaphysical practice: Feng Shui remediation strategy, BaZi timing decisions, ritual approach, and QMDJ tactical deployment. The Xu-Shi (虛實, Empty-Full) framework of Chapter 6 of Sun Tzu flows directly through many of the 36 stratagems into practical Feng Shui: striking Sha (killing energy) at its emptiness, avoiding direct conflict with strong negative Qi. The "Besiege Wei to Rescue Zhao" stratagem explicitly models the indirect Feng Shui remediation approach.
