The First Thought, the Right Thought: Mastering Intuition and Intention
第一念,正確的念頭:掌握直覺與念力
A synthesis of insights on self-inquiry, the state of surrender, and the training of intuition and intention as life-shaping capacities.
In the path of cultivation, we often look for external tools and complex rituals. However, two recent talks within the Art of Living ecosystem remind us that the most potent instruments are already within: our intuition and our intention (Sankalpa/念力).
Self-Inquiry and the State of Being
True spiritual practice often begins with simple, yet profound questions: "Who am I?" and "What is the purpose of life?" These are not merely intellectual exercises; they are tools to clear the mental cobwebs, building clarity and inner stability. Instead of seeking answers externally, turning inward builds a foundation that reduces life's challenges at their source.
Complementing this inquiry is the state of surrender. Surrender is not a singular act or a performance; it is a state of being. It is the feeling of being totally at home, or a child in a parent's arms. We are already surrendered at a deeper level; our work is simply to drop the self-created barriers and boundaries that prevent us from experiencing this natural state.
The Mechanics of Intuition
Intuition is often defined as "the first thought, the right thought at the right time." It arises not from overthinking, but from a calm mind. When the mind is settled through practices like Pranayama and Sahaj Samadhi, we access information and confidence beyond our usual cognitive limits.
Practitioners report remarkable outcomes from this training:
- Enhanced Cognitive Recall: The ability to mentally "see" textbook pages or specific locations of lost items (photographic-style recall).
- Access to Innate Knowledge: Understanding complex subjects like mathematics or formulas without explicit teaching, as if tapping into a pre-existing field of information.
- Interpersonal Discernment: Using intuition to guide leadership decisions, choose friends, and sense the "aura" or intentions of others for safety and alignment.
The Sovereignty of Intention (念力)
Perhaps the most critical factor in this process is intention. A positive, doubt-free resolve — the "I will be able to do this" — allows outcomes to unfold rapidly. Self-doubt, conversely, acts as a primary block. When life energy (Prana) is high, doubt cannot easily take root, allowing intention to manifest effectively.
This extends even to our connection with the physical world. By deeply connecting to an object and regarding it as part of oneself, the sense of "oneness" combined with strong intention can influence the physical environment (often described as telekinesis). The same principle applies to relationships: seeing others as part of oneself naturally increases belongingness and love.
Spirituality in Action
Spirituality is not separate from material life or business. It is the expression of the spirit's qualities: compassion, love, integrity, honesty, enthusiasm, and generosity. In business, ethics is spirituality in action. A spiritual foundation provides the resilience, intuition, and confidence necessary for sound decision-making and long-term success.
The goal is not to strain for bliss, but to allow it to "ooze out" naturally through regular practice. Like a flower spreading its fragrance, a centered practitioner returns to their core whenever stressed, maintaining impact without losing inner peace.
"Keep your money in your pocket, not in your mind. Use money as a tool, but do not let it dominate your identity or your peace."
By protecting genuine self-confidence and keeping the ego "in the pocket," we navigate the world with both power and humility.
