4. Zen Ethics: The Fragrance of Merit
Consistent with our Zen Syncretism , the incense we burn is the physical representation of our Merit (De) . The fragrance is not for the "Gods" to enjoy, but to remind the practitioner to keep their heart "Fragrant" with Xingshan Jide (Accumulating Merit). The smoke reminds us of the Void (Wuji)—it arises from matter, fills the space, and returns to nothingness.
Technical Tip:
Observe the way the incense burns (Wai Ying). If the stick breaks or refuses to light, it is a "Signal" that the Altar office is currently "Closed" or that the petition is insincere. Use the Flower Character for "Cleansing" over the burner and recite the Zong Jue to reset the connection before proceeding.
