📜 What is the Daozang?
The Daozang (道藏) is the immense canon of Taoist scriptures, comprising over 1,400 texts collected over millennia. For a practitioner of Liuren Fajiao , we do not need to read every volume. Instead, we focus on the texts that provide the technical theory for ritual magic, alchemy, and spiritual resonance.
Below are the essential "Handbooks" for the magician.
✦ ◆ ✦
1. Baopuzi: The Magician's Handbook (抱朴子)
Author: Ge Hong (葛洪) | Dynasty: Eastern Jin (317–420 AD) | Canon Ref: DZ 1185 (Inner Chapters)
Written by Ge Hong , a scholar-official and alchemist, this text is unique for bridging Confucian ethics with Daoist immortality practices. The Inner Chapters focus on esoteric alchemy and magic, while the Outer Chapters address social governance.
Key Concept: Entering the Mountains (入山)
Ge Hong warns that the mountains are filled with spirits, tigers, and demons. One cannot enter safely without the "Three Treasures" of protection : Talismans (Fu), Mirrors, and Steps (Yu Pace).
Relevance: This validates the Liuren emphasis on Fengshen (Sealing Body) and carrying protective talismans. Magic is not just for praying; it is survival gear for a dangerous spiritual environment.
Must-Read Chapter: Dengshe (登涉) - Climbing and Wading.
2. Yinfu Jing: The Scripture of Hidden Talismans (陰符經)
Attribution: Yellow Emperor (Mythical) / Li Quan (Tang Commentary) | Dynasty: Tang (c. 8th Century) | Canon Ref: DZ 31
A short, ruthless text on the "Mechanism" (Ji 機) of the universe. Unlike devotional scriptures, it presents a "Realpolitik" view of cosmic energy, treating cultivation as strategic theft .
Key Concept: Stealing the Mechanism (盜機)
"Heaven and Earth are the thieves of all things; all things are the thieves of Man; Man is the thief of all things."
Relevance: Fajiao is proactive. We do not passively wait for fate. We "steal" the creative power of Heaven and Earth (the Mechanism) through ritual to change our destiny (e.g., healing, wealth). This is the philosophical justification for Interventionist Magic .
3. Taishang Ganying Pian: Resonance & Response (太上感應篇)
Origin: Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 AD) | Canon Ref: DZ 1167
Popularized during the Song Dynasty as a "Ledger of Merit and Demerit," this text became the foundational guide for lay morality in China, blending Daoist metaphysics with Confucian ethics.
Key Concept: The Echo (感應)
"Disaster and blessing have no door; man calls them in himself. Reward and retribution follow like a shadow following a form."
Relevance: This explains why magic works or fails. It depends on the "Resonance" between the practitioner's virtue/intent and the Heaven. If the "signal" (Virtue) is weak, the "echo" (Miracle) will be silent.
4. Beidou Jing: The Northern Dipper Scripture (北斗經)
Full Title: Taishang Xuanling Beidou Benming Yansheng Zhenjing | Dynasty: Song (attributed) | Canon Ref: DZ 622
The central text for Star Worship (Baidao). In Liuren, the Seven Stars are crucial for "dissolving disasters" (Jie) and prolonging life.
- Ritual Connection: The "Seven Star Lamp" (七星燈) rituals used in Liuren for life extension directly derive from this canon.
- The Registrar: The Dipper records life and death. To change one's fate, one must appeal to the Dipper.

📚 Integrating Into Practice
Do not treat these as dry academic texts. They are maps .
- Read Baopuzi when you need courage and protection logic.
- Read Yinfu Jing when you need to understand timing and strategy.
- Read Ganying Pian when you feel your magic is losing potency (check your virtue).
