About Sak Yant

Sak Yant (Sak = Tap/Tattoo, Yant = Yantra) is the ancient art of magical tattooing. Rooted in Khmer, Brahman, and Buddhist traditions, these designs are not merely decorative but are believed to imbue the wearer with specific magical powers (Siddhi) such as protection (Kong Grapan), charm (Metta Mahaniyom), or wealth (Maha Lap).

Gao Yord (Nine Spires)

Yant Gao Yord / ยันต์เก้ายอด

The "Master Yant". Often the first tattoo received. It represents the 9 Peaks of Mount Meru (the center of the universe) or the 9 Attributes of the Buddha.

  • Power: Universal protection, authority, and spiritual connection.
  • Placement: Base of the neck (highest point of the back).

Hah Taew (Five Lines)

Yant Hah Taew / ยันต์ห้าแถว

Popularized globally, each of the five lines carries a specific spell:

  1. Feng Shui correction (clearing bad energy).
  2. Reversing bad horoscope constellations.
  3. Protection against black magic/curses.
  4. Success, fortune, and ambitious drive.
  5. Metta (Charm) and attraction.

Paed Tidt (Eight Directions)

Yant Paed Tidt / ยันต์แปดทิศ

A geometric mandala representing the eight directions of the universe. Often contains the "Itipiso" mantra.

  • Power: Protection from all sides when traveling. "Pulling" help from all directions.
  • Placement: Center of the back.

Hanuman (Monkey God)

Yant Hanuman / ยันต์หนุมาน

The invincible general of Rama. Represents agility, bravery, and undying loyalty.

  • Power: Invulnerability (Kong Grapan), courage, and winning in competition. Favored by Muay Thai fighters and soldiers.
  • Note: Requires strict adherence to precepts to maintain power.

Suea Koo (Twin Tigers)

Yant Suea Koo / ยันต์เสือคู่

Two tigers facing each other or looking back. Represents supreme power and authority.

  • Power: Maha Amnaj (Great Authority). Commands respect from subordinates and strikes fear into enemies.
  • Placement: Lower back.

Phra Pidta (Closed Eyes)

Yant Phra Pidta / ยันต์พระปิดตา

The Buddha covering his eyes (and sometimes ears/mouth) to block out worldly suffering.

  • Power: Maha Ud (Stopping weapons/danger). Also wealth accumulation (preventing money from leaking out).
