The Architecture of the Hexagrams

In Xuan Kong Da Gua, the 64 hexagrams are mapped to the 360-degree compass. Each hexagram has a specific **Gua Qi** (Five Element Number) and **Gua Yun** (Period Luck). To achieve prosperity, the practitioner must align the building's orientation with a hexagram that is **Timely** (based on Gua Yun) and **Harmonious** (based on Gua Qi).

The 64 Hexagrams Master Grid

This table lists the hexagrams in their standard order. (Note: For audit purposes, these are mapped to the 24 Mountains.)

🧭 64 Hexagrams Mapped to the 24 Mountains

In Xuan Kong Da Gua, the 360° compass is divided into 24 Mountains (二十四山), and each Mountain is further subdivided to accommodate specific hexagram lines. The 64 hexagrams are distributed across the compass so that each of the 24 Mountains contains either 2 or 3 hexagrams , each occupying a narrow arc of approximately 5.625° to 7.5°.

The Distribution Logic

The mapping follows the Later Heaven (後天) Bagua arrangement. Each of the 8 trigrams governs 3 Mountains (totaling 24). Within each Mountain, the hexagrams are determined by the Yao (爻, line) positions — specifically the 4th, 5th, and 6th lines (upper trigram) relative to the fixed lower trigram of that compass sector.

For practitioners: the hexagram assigned to a building's sitting or facing is determined by the precise compass degree , not just the general Mountain direction. A difference of 3° can mean a completely different hexagram — this is why Da Gua audits require high-precision Luopan readings.

🔄 Parent & Reverse Hexagram Concepts

In Xuan Kong Da Gua, the relationship between the Sitting hexagram and the Facing hexagram is analyzed through transformation logic. Two critical concepts:

Parent Hexagram (父母卦, Fùmǔ Guà)

The Parent hexagram is the source or origin. In Da Gua, the Sitting direction represents the "mountain" (山) — the solid backing, the ancestry. The Sitting hexagram is considered the "Parent" because it is the source of Qi that feeds the building.

The Parent hexagram defines the base nature of the site. Its Gua Qi (element number) determines what kind of energy the building inherently carries.

Reverse Hexagram (反卦 / 錯卦)

The Reverse (also called "Inverted" or "Overturned") hexagram is created by flipping the hexagram upside down — what was the top line becomes the bottom line. This reveals the hidden, opposite nature of the original hexagram.

In audit practice, when the Sitting and Facing hexagrams are each other's reverse, the relationship is considered complementary — Yin and Yang perfectly mirrored. This is one of the auspicious configurations.

Additional Transformation: Nuclear Hexagram (互卦, Hù Guà)
The Nuclear hexagram is derived from the inner four lines (lines 2-3-4-5) of the original hexagram, forming a new hexagram. It reveals the hidden internal dynamics — the "DNA" beneath the surface. Skilled Da Gua practitioners check the Nuclear hexagram to understand what unseen forces are at work within a building's energy pattern.

🔟 Sum-to-10 Auspicious Combinations (合十)

The He Shi (合十, Sum-to-10) principle is one of the most prized configurations in Xuan Kong. When two Gua Qi numbers add up to exactly 10, they form a perfect complementary pair — the yin-yang balance is complete.

PairGua Qi AGua Qi BSumElement CombinationSignificance
1 + 91 (Water)9 (Metal)10 ✓Water + MetalWisdom meets authority; powerful for career
2 + 82 (Fire)8 (Wood)10 ✓Fire + WoodBrilliance fueled by growth; academic success
3 + 73 (Wood)7 (Fire)10 ✓Wood + FireCreation and illumination; artistic achievement
4 + 64 (Metal)6 (Water)10 ✓Metal + WaterStructure produces flow; financial prosperity

When He Shi (合十) Applies

  • Sitting + Facing: When the Sitting hexagram's Gua Qi and the Facing hexagram's Gua Qi sum to 10, the building achieves a natural balance between its backing energy and its outward-reaching energy.
  • Mountain Star + Water Star: In a Flying Star chart, when the Mountain Star and Water Star in the same palace sum to 10, that sector is considered exceptionally harmonious.
  • Natal Chart + Annual Star: When a timely annual star combines with a natal star to sum to 10, that year brings special fortune to that sector.

🌱 Generative Sums (合生成) Principle

Beyond the Sum-to-10, Xuan Kong Da Gua recognizes He Sheng Cheng (合生成) — "Generative Completion" combinations based on the He Tu (河圖) production numbers:

Production PairHe Tu BasisElementSumMeaning
1 & 6天一生水,地六成之Water7Heaven creates Water (1), Earth completes it (6). Water reaches fullness.
2 & 7地二生火,天七成之Fire9Earth creates Fire (2), Heaven completes it (7). Fire reaches fullness.
3 & 8天三生木,地八成之Wood11Heaven creates Wood (3), Earth completes it (8). Wood reaches fullness.
4 & 9地四生金,天九成之Metal13Earth creates Metal (4), Heaven completes it (9). Metal reaches fullness.
5 & 10天五生土,地十成之Earth15Heaven creates Earth (5), Earth completes itself (10). Central stability.

When the Sitting and Facing hexagrams' Gua Qi numbers form a He Sheng Cheng pair (e.g., Sitting = 1, Facing = 6), the building is said to have "completed its elemental destiny" — the energy pattern is whole. This is considered highly auspicious, though slightly less powerful than He Shi (合十) in most lineage teachings.

🔮 Period 9 Key Hexagram Pairings Quick Reference

In Period 9 (2024–2043), hexagrams with Gua Yun 9 are at peak prosperity. Below are the most favorable Sitting-Facing hexagram combinations for this period:

ConfigurationSitting HexagramFacing HexagramRelationshipPeriod 9 Rating
S1 FacingKan (坎) palace hexagramLi (離) palace hexagramHe Shi (1+9=10)⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Optimal
SW-NE AxisGen (艮) palace hexagramKun (坤) palace hexagramHe Sheng Cheng (Earth pairing)⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent

E-W AxisDui (兌) palace hexagramZhen (震) palace hexagramHe Shi (3+7=10)⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent
Period 9 Star at FacingAny with Gua Yun 9 at sittingAny with Gua Yun 9 at facingDouble timely star⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Exceptional
Period 9 Key Insight: The South-North axis (Li-Kan) is the "royal axis" of Period 9. Buildings facing South with North sitting can achieve the coveted Wang Shan Wang Shui (旺山旺水, "Prosperous Mountain Prosperous Water") configuration. The Period 9 star (九紫右弼) lands at the Facing position as the timely Water Star, while the Period 1 star (一白貪狼, the "future prosperity" star) supports from the Sitting direction. This combination is considered the best possible Period 9 orientation.

⚠️ Period 9 Cautions

  • Avoid Gua Yun 5 at Facing: The 5 Yellow (五黃) hexagrams at the Facing position bring severe misfortune regardless of other factors
  • Avoid Gua Yun 2 or 3 as primary stars: These are deeply untimely in Period 9 — illness (2) and litigation (3)
  • Check the Annual overlay: Even a perfect Da Gua chart can have difficult years when annual inauspicious stars overlap with sensitive positions
  • Precision matters: A compass error of just 2–3° can shift the hexagram assignment entirely, turning an auspicious reading into an inauspicious one. Always use a calibrated Luopan and take multiple readings.
