6.1 Opening Strategy (批命的開頭法)
Critical Importance : First impression determines entire consultation success. If client rejects your opening, subsequent analysis faces uphill resistance.
Method 1: Steady Foundation (穩健法) - Recommended for Beginners
Procedure :
- Write out Five Elements flow for client to see
- Systematically explain which aspects are favorable, which problematic
- Step-by-step through generation/conquest chains
Pros :
- Safe, builds trust through transparency
- Educational for client (they learn framework)
- Difficult to reject because logic is explicit
Cons :
- Takes longer
- Less dramatic impact
- Requires client patience
When to Use : Learning phase, clients with analytical mindset, situations where accuracy matters more than showmanship
Method 2: Direct Defect Identification (直指缺點法) - Advanced Technique
Procedure :
- Immediately after plotting chart, identify primary vulnerability
- Lead with the negative directly : "Your chart fundamentally disadvantages commercial entrepreneurship" or "Your primary issue is wealth destruction"
- Let statement hang (client's mind goes blank momentarily)
- Immediately follow with detailed explanation of causation
Psychology :
- Direct critique creates cognitive shock → receptivity window
- Like approaching romantic interest: don't open with "you're ugly" (instant rejection), but do open with "your financial habits create vulnerability" (curiosity + concern)
Risks :
- If explanation fails to convince, client feels attacked and disengages
- Requires confident delivery
- Demands immediate pivoting to constructive analysis
Requirements :
- Must quickly process complete Five Elements flow (experienced practitioners only)
- Must prepare explanation before dropping critique
- "Don't criticize just to criticize—must have solution pathway ready"
When to Use : Experienced phase, clients who've seen multiple practitioners (need differentiation), charts with obvious glaring issues
Method 3: Strength Spotlight (特色法) - Relationship Building
Procedure :
- Identify chart's strongest domain
- Lead with the positive : "Your Authority fortune is exceptionally strong—財生官生印 pattern ideal for organizational/governmental careers"
- Build rapport with affirmation
- Transition to areas needing attention
Pros :
- Client opens emotionally
- Creates collaborative atmosphere
- Easier to discuss problems after establishing positive frame
Cons :
- If chart truly problematic, forced positivity seems dishonest
- May set unrealistic expectations
When to Use : Clients with anxiety/low confidence, charts with genuine strengths, situations prioritizing long-term client relationship
🚫 AVOID: "Three Gates of Fate" (命理過三關)
Some practitioners use "pass three challenges" opening—asking three yes/no questions to prove accuracy before full analysis.
Why This Backfires :
- You're burning your highest-confidence predictions on party tricks
- If you miss even one of three, credibility destroyed before real work begins
- "You put your most certain predictions up front, but if those miss, everything else is doubted. Better to save certainty for meaningful insights."
Master Zhong's Warning : "Many want to appear as 'super fortune teller' (超級神算) to impress clients. So they try to guess three past events. But you only have maybe five genuinely high-confidence insights per chart. Wasting three on this parlor trick, then discovering you were wrong on one? Your consultation is now dead in the water."
