About this Module

In the Liuren system, BaZi (Eight Characters) is not just for fortune telling—it is a diagnostic tool for understanding the "Elemental Constitution" of a person. This module covers the Ten Gods (Shi Shen) , which translate elemental interactions into human relationships, and the medical mappings used for health diagnosis.

0. The Derivation Framework — How Ten Gods Are Born

The Ten Gods (十神) are not arbitrary symbols. They are mathematically derived through a two-step process: Five Element Relationship + Yin/Yang Polarity . Understanding this derivation is essential for advanced analysis.

Step 1: Five Element Relationship (五行关系)

Every element in your chart has exactly one of five relationships to your Day Master. This relationship determines the category of the Ten God:

第一步:五行生克关系

命局中任何五行與日主的關係,必定屬於以下五種之一:

RelationshipChineseMeaningProducesGroup Name
Resource生我Element that produces me2 Gods印星 (Seal Group)
Companion同我Same element as me2 Gods比劫 (Parallel Group)
Output我生Element I produce2 Gods食傷 (Expression Group)
Wealth我剋Element I control2 Gods財星 (Wealth Group)
Influence剋我Element that controls me2 Gods官殺 (Officer Group)

Step 2: Polarity Split (阴阳之分)

Each of the five relationships above produces TWO gods, depending on whether the polarity (Yin/Yang) of the element matches the Day Master's polarity:

  • Same polarity (同性): Yang DM + Yang Element, or Yin DM + Yin Element → produces the 偏 (Indirect) variant
  • Opposite polarity (異性): Yang DM + Yin Element, or Yin DM + Yang Element → produces the 正 (Direct) variant

第二步:陰陽異同

每一組五行關係再根據陰陽異同,分化出兩個十神:

  • 同性: 陽干見陽干,或陰干見陰干 → 產生
  • 異性: 陽干見陰干,或陰干見陽干 → 產生

1. The Ten Gods (十神) System

The Ten Gods are derived from the relationship between the Day Master (The Self) and the other elements in the chart. They represent social roles, family members, and psychological archetypes.

The interactions are based on the Five Element cycles (Production and Control). Depending on whether the polarity (Yin/Yang) is the same or different, we get 10 distinct archetypes.

十神是根據 日主(我) 與命局中其他五行的生剋關係演變而來。依據陰陽同性或異性的不同,衍生出十種獨特的人格與社會屬性。

Complete Liu Qin (六亲) — Six Relatives Mapping

The Ten Gods map to family members DIFFERENTLY depending on whether the Day Master is male or female. This is because the spouse star is always the element that controls you (剋我), but the children star differs: for males it's the element that controls them (官殺); for females it's the element they produce (食傷).

⚠️ Critical Interpretation Notes

  • Father mapping: Male DM = 偏財 (element he controls); Female DM = 偏印 (the element that produces Mother, who then produces Father in classical theory)
  • Children mapping: Male DM = 官殺 (element that controls him — children discipline the father); Female DM = 食傷 (element she produces — mother births children)
  • Spouse mapping: Always the element that controls you (剋我). 正 = legitimate spouse; 偏 = lover/mistress
  • Why Indirect Wealth is Father for males: Father represents external resources, the "other" wealth beyond one's own earnings

2.3 Ten Gods → Health Correlation Matrix (十神健康對照)

Beyond the basic Five Element mapping, each Ten God carries specific health implications when it dominates the chart or is activated by timing. This matrix represents the synthesis of classical medical BaZi theory from texts such as the 三命通會 (Sān Mìng Tōng Huì) and 淵海子平 (Yuān Hǎi Zǐ Píng) .

Reading Principle: When a Ten God is excessively strong, deficient, or clashed in the chart, the corresponding organ systems and health patterns become vulnerable. The polarity (Direct 正 vs. Indirect 偏) further refines the expression — Direct gods manifest as mainstream conditions, while Indirect gods produce atypical or complex presentations.

解讀原則: 當某十神過旺、過弱或逢沖時,對應的臟腑系統與健康模式便易出現問題。陰陽正偏之分進一步細化其表現——正神多顯現為常見病症,偏神則呈現非典型或複雜症狀。

2.4 Psychosomatic-Emotional Patterns (情志致病)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Five Emotions (五志 Wǔ Zhì) are not merely psychological states but physiological forces that directly affect organ function. The Huang Di Nei Jing establishes: "怒伤肝、喜伤心、思伤脾、悲伤肺、恐伤肾" — Anger damages the Liver, Joy damages the Heart, Worry damages the Spleen, Grief damages the Lung, Fear damages the Kidney.

Clinical Principle: When a Ten God that governs a particular emotion dominates the chart OR is under severe pressure from clashes/combinations, the corresponding organ system becomes vulnerable. This is not abstract psychology — it is a mechanistic prediction of organ stress based on the energetic configuration.

Anger ↔ Wood/Liver

Ten Gods: Seven Killings (七殺), Hurting Officer (傷官), Rob Wealth (劫財)

Pattern: Excessive anger or suppressed rage → Liver Qi stagnation → rib-side pain, migraines, eye problems, menstrual irregularities, hypertension.

Classical Formula: Xiao Yao San (逍遙散) to soothe Liver and spread Qi.

喜 — Joy ↔ Fire/Heart

Ten Gods: Eating God (食神), Indirect Wealth (偏財)

Pattern: Excessive joy or manic excitement → Heart Fire blazing → palpitations, insomnia, anxiety, manic behavior, speech disorders.

Classical Formula: Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (天王補心丹) to nourish Heart Yin.

思 — Worry/Pensiveness ↔ Earth/Spleen

Ten Gods: Direct Wealth (正財), Direct Officer (正官), Direct Resource (正印)

Pattern: Excessive worry or overthinking → Spleen Qi stagnation → digestive disorders, bloating, poor appetite, fatigue, muscle weakness.

Classical Formula: Gui Pi Tang (歸脾湯) to strengthen Spleen and nourish Heart.

悲 — Grief ↔ Metal/Lung

Ten Gods: Direct Officer (正官), Indirect Resource (偏印)

Pattern: Excessive grief or suppressed sorrow → Lung Qi deficiency → respiratory weakness, asthma, skin conditions, chronic fatigue, immune deficiency.

Classical Formula: Bai He Gu Jin Tang (百合固金湯) to nourish Lung Yin.

恐 — Fear ↔ Water/Kidney

Ten Gods: Seven Killings (七殺), Indirect Resource (偏印)

Pattern: Excessive fear or chronic anxiety → Kidney Qi depletion → lower back pain, urinary issues, reproductive weakness, hearing problems, bone density issues.

Classical Formula: Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (金匱腎氣丸) to warm Kidney Yang.

驚 — Shock/Fright ↔ Heart/Kidney Axis

Ten Gods: Seven Killings (七殺) when clashed suddenly

Pattern: Sudden shock or trauma → Heart-Kidney communication disrupted → palpitations, insomnia with fear, night sweats, panic attacks.

Classical Formula: Ci Zhu Wan (磁朱丸) to calm Spirit and anchor Yang.

2.5 Disease Timing Through Luck Pillars (運程病機)

The prediction of health crises is one of the most practical applications of Medical BaZi. The principle is straightforward: the natal chart reveals constitutional vulnerability, while the Luck Pillars (大運 Dà Yùn) and Annual Pillars (流年 Liú Nián) reveal when that vulnerability will be triggered.

The Three-Step Timing Method
  1. Identify Constitutional Weakness (先天體質): Which element is missing, deficient, or excessively strong in the natal chart?
  2. Analyze Luck Pillar Pressure (大運壓力): Does the current 10-year Luck Pillar further weaken, clash, or overwhelm the vulnerable element?
  3. Pinpoint Annual Trigger (流年觸發): Does the Annual Pillar deliver the final "blow" — creating a triple-layer attack on the organ system?
Luck Pillar MechanismChineseHealth Trigger PatternExample
Further Weakening加重虛弱Luck Pillar element controls or drains the already-weak constitutional elementConstitutional Water deficiency → Earth Luck Pillar arrives (Earth controls Water) → Kidney stress
Branch Clash地支相沖Luck Pillar Branch clashes with Day Branch (Spouse Palace = body core)Day Branch 卯 → Luck Pillar 酉 arrives (卯酉沖) → sudden illness or surgery
Excessive Buildup太過積聚Luck Pillar adds MORE of the already-excessive elementFire-dominant chart → Fire Luck Pillar arrives → Heart/ cardiovascular crisis
Shen Sha Activation神煞觸發Yang Ren (羊刃), Bing Fu (病符), or Bai Hu (白虎) activated by transitNatal Yang Ren in 午 → 子 year arrives (子午沖) → injury or surgical intervention
Formation Destruction格局破壞A protective formation in the natal chart is broken by Luck Pillar食神制殺 formation → Indirect Resource (Owl) arrives in Luck Pillar → 梟神奪食 → health collapse
Empty Tomb Opening墓庫開啟A Tomb (辰戌醜未) storing disease potential is "opened" by clashNatal 戌 Tomb containing hidden illness factor → 辰 Luck Pillar clashes open → latent disease manifests
Critical Timing Window Principle

The highest-risk period is when both the Luck Pillar AND the Annual Pillar simultaneously attack the weak element. This creates a "double-strike" effect:

  • Luck Pillar sets the macro-condition (weakens the system over 10 years)
  • Annual Pillar provides the immediate trigger (the year of crisis)

Example: A patient with constitutional Fire weakness enters a Water Luck Pillar (Water controls Fire). The 10-year period is characterized by Heart vulnerability. Within that period, a Water-heavy year (e.g., 壬子 year) delivers the trigger — this is the predicted year of cardiovascular event.

Integration with Seasonal Cultivation

Constitutional treatment is most effective when aligned with seasonal energy. The Huang Di Nei Jing principle "春夏養陽,秋冬養陰" (Spring/Summer nourish Yang; Autumn/Winter nourish Yin) combines with Ten God analysis:

  • Seven Killings dominant: Winter (Water season) is critical — Kidney support prevents total exhaustion
  • Hurting Officer dominant: Summer (Fire season) requires caution — excess Fire damages Yin further
  • Direct Wealth dominant: Late Summer (Earth season) is optimal for Spleen strengthening
  • Direct Officer dominant: Autumn (Metal season) supports Lung tonification

For complete seasonal cultivation guidance, see Medical Astrology Module .

3. Ten Gods — Character Archetypes (十神人格)

Each of the Ten Gods embodies a distinct psychological archetype. When a particular God dominates a chart (especially appearing as the Month Stem Dominant God 月令透干 or the strongest element), it profoundly shapes the native's personality, career path, and even physical health predispositions.

Read these archetypes as tendencies, not absolutes. A chart with multiple strong Gods produces a blend. The polarity (Yin vs Yang variant) further refines the expression.

以下人格原型為傾向而非定論。命局中若多神並旺,則性格為混合型。陰陽正偏之分進一步細化其表現。

🤝 Companion Group — 同我 (Self & Peers)

比肩 Bǐ Jiān — The Shoulder (Friend)

Archetype: The Independent Operator. Self-reliant, principled, and driven by personal will-power. Prefers to earn through direct effort rather than relying on others.

Personality: Honest, straightforward, competitive in a fair-play manner. Can be stubborn and unwilling to compromise. Values autonomy above all.

Career: Solo entrepreneurs, athletes, skilled tradespeople, freelancers, independent consultants. Excels where personal effort directly determines income.

Health: Robust constitution but prone to overwork injuries, musculoskeletal strain, and stress from shouldering too much alone. Tendency to ignore early symptoms.

劫財 Jié Cái — Rob Wealth

Archetype: The Charismatic Competitor. Aggressive, socially magnetic, and willing to use any advantage. The "hands of others" — leverages networks and partnerships.

Personality: Bold, persuasive, restless, and risk-seeking. Generous to allies but ruthless to rivals. Hidden agendas are common. Thrives on high-stakes environments.

Career: Venture capitalists, military/police leaders, stockbrokers, competitive sales, team leaders who "conquer markets." Excels in high-risk, high-reward arenas.

食神 Shí Shén — Eating God

Archetype: The Happy Buddha. Gentle, talented, and naturally expressive. Represents the "soft" creative output that produces wealth organically. The source of wealth (財源).

Career: Chefs, artists, musicians, teachers, consultants, writers, therapists. Any role where natural talent translates smoothly into income without aggressive competition.

Health: Generally good longevity (食神制殺 protects life). Prone to weight gain, digestive overindulgence, and metabolic disorders from sedentary hedonism.

傷官 Shāng Guān — Hurting Officer

Archetype: The Rebel Genius. Sharp, unconventional, technically brilliant, and fundamentally anti-authoritarian. The "aggressive" output that challenges the status quo.

Personality: Quick-witted, proud, emotionally intense, and disdainful of mediocrity. Offends superiors easily. Craves recognition for intellectual superiority. Vanity is the shadow side.

Career: Lawyers, surgeons, engineers, performers, tech innovators, political strategists. Excels where "breaking the old system" is the path to power.

Health: Reproductive system vulnerabilities (especially for females). Nervous system disorders, insomnia, and emotional burnout. Injury to hands/limbs from over-exertion.

Personality: Generous, sociable, charismatic with money. Comfortable with risk and large transactions. May be unfaithful in relationships (the "mistress" star for males). Lives large.

正財 Zhèng Cái — Direct Wealth

Archetype: The Steady Accumulator. Values security, fixed assets, and reliable income. Represents salary, property, and the stable domestic sphere.

Personality: Frugal, responsible, detail-oriented, and conservative. Loyal spouse (the "wife" star for males). Risk-averse. May become narrow-minded or overly materialistic.

Career: Accountants, bank managers, civil servants, property managers, farming, retail operations. Roles with predictable income and tangible output.

Health: Digestive system and spleen/stomach issues from worry about money. Prone to chronic fatigue from working too many hours. Generally stable constitution.

⚖️ Influence Group — 剋我 (Discipline & Power)

七殺 Qī Shā — Seven Killings

Archetype: The Wild Horse. Raw power, danger, authority, and survival instinct. Must be "tamed" (制化) to become constructive; untamed, it destroys the Day Master.

Personality: Decisive, fearless, commanding, and intense. Natural leader in crisis situations. When negative: violent, paranoid, bullying, and attracted to danger.

Career: Military generals, police chiefs, surgeons, martial artists, crisis managers, CEOs of turnaround companies. Thrives where life-and-death pressure exists.

Health: Prone to injuries from violence or accidents, chronic pain, high blood pressure, and autoimmune conditions. The body is constantly under "attack" energy.

Archetype: The Noble Administrator. Represents law, order, reputation, and legitimate authority. The "gentleman's" path to power through propriety and credentialing.

Personality: Responsible, reputation-conscious, conservative, and rule-following. Respects hierarchy. May become rigid, overly cautious, or "trapped" by social expectations.

Career: Government officials, judges, corporate managers, diplomats, professors. Any role where a formal title and institutional authority define success.

Health: Stress-related conditions from carrying heavy responsibility. Prone to musculoskeletal tension (shoulders, back), headaches, and premature aging from duty.

📚 Resource Group — 生我 (Support & Knowledge)

偏印 Piān Yìn — Indirect Resource (Owl)

Archetype: The Lone Scholar. Drawn to unconventional, esoteric, or niche knowledge. The "Owl" (梟神) that hunts alone at night — deep intuition, but isolation.

Personality: Introspective, idiosyncratic, brilliant in narrow fields, suspicious, and emotionally detached. Often misunderstood. Prefers solitary mastery over social popularity.

Career: Researchers, occult practitioners, astrologers, pharmacists, computer scientists, intelligence analysts. Any field where specialized/secret knowledge is the key asset.

Health: Mental health vulnerabilities — depression, obsessive thinking, insomnia. The "Owl steals the meal" (梟奪食) formation can indicate eating disorders or chronic malabsorption.

正印 Zhèng Yìn — Direct Resource (Seal)

Archetype: The Nurtured Noble. Protected by tradition, credentials, and maternal energy. Represents mainstream education, the official seal of authority, and comfortable support.

Personality: Kind, patient, nurturing, traditional, and academic. Loves learning but may be passive — expecting support rather than earning it. Comfortable, sometimes complacent.

Career: Teachers, professors, civil service (administrative), publishers, religious leaders, real estate (property = Seal). Success through credentials and institutional backing.

Health: Generally protected (Seal nurtures the Self). Vulnerabilities appear when Seal is destroyed — sudden loss of support leads to immune collapse, depression, or respiratory issues.

4. Key Formations — Ten God Interactions (格局)

When specific Ten Gods meet in a chart, they create Formations (格局 Gé Jú) — repeatable patterns that ancient masters catalogued over centuries. These formations determine whether the Ten Gods work constructively or destructively.

A formation is "established" (成格) when the key gods are present, properly positioned, and unbroken by destructive elements. A "broken" formation (破格) reverses the positive outcome.

格局「成格」需關鍵十神齊備、位置得宜、且無破壞之神。若格局遭「破格」,則吉變凶、成功逆轉。

食神制殺 — Eating God Controls Seven Killings

Structure: 食神 (Shí Shén) restrains 七殺 (Qī Shā) — Output element controls the Killing element.

Mechanism: The Eating God, being the gentle output of the Day Master, acts as a "civilizing" force on the dangerous Seven Killings. Instead of being crushed by pressure, the native channels aggression into disciplined achievement.

Life Pattern: Authority gained through competence rather than brute force. Common among high-ranking military strategists, corporate leaders who rose through technical expertise, and scholars who wield administrative power. This formation also protects longevity — the Eating God "keeps the tiger leashed."

Broken If: 偏印 (Piān Yìn / Owl) appears and "steals the meal" (梟奪食), removing the control. The Seven Killings is then unleashed — the native faces violence, illness, or catastrophic failure.

傷官見官 — Hurting Officer Meets Direct Officer

Structure: 傷官 (Shāng Guān) encounters 正官 (Zhèng Guān) — the rebel meets the establishment.

Mechanism: The Hurting Officer's nature is to attack and overthrow authority (the Officer). When both appear prominently, the native is in perpetual conflict with systems of power. The classic saying: "傷官見官,為禍百端" — "When the Hurting Officer sees the Officer, a hundred calamities arise."

Life Pattern: Lawsuits, job dismissals, reputation scandals, and clashes with superiors. However, if the Seal (印) intervenes to mediate — transforming the Officer's energy before the Hurting Officer attacks — the native becomes a brilliant reformer who changes institutions from within.

Exception: For Day Masters born in specific months (e.g., 甲 Wood DM in 秋 Autumn), this formation can paradoxically produce great wealth through "breaking the old to build the new."

財滋弱殺 — Wealth Feeds Weak Seven Killings

Structure: 財 (Cái) generates and strengthens a weak 七殺 (Qī Shā).

Mechanism: When the Seven Killings is too weak to function as a useful "pressure" for the Day Master, Wealth (which produces the Killing element in the production cycle) can "feed" it to proper strength. The Day Master then has both wealth and authority.

Life Pattern: Wealthy businesspeople who leverage financial power into political or institutional authority. The native uses money to gain official titles, government connections, or corporate board positions. Common among political donors and business-politicians.

Danger: If Wealth feeds an already strong Seven Killings, the pressure on the Day Master becomes overwhelming — bankruptcy, imprisonment, or health collapse as the "enemy" grows too powerful to control.

印化殺 — Seal Transforms Seven Killings

Structure: 印 (Yìn / Seal) acts as intermediary between 七殺 (Qī Shā) and the Day Master.

Mechanism: The Seven Killings (which controls/attacks the Day Master) produces the Seal element in the Five Element cycle. The Seal then nurtures the Day Master. Thus, the dangerous pressure is alchemically transformed into nourishment: 殺 → 印 → 我 (Killing → Seal → Self).

Life Pattern: Scholars who attain high administrative power. The classic "warrior-sage" — someone who endures great hardship (殺) and converts it into wisdom and credentials (印). Common among PhD holders who become government advisors, and military officers who become university professors.

Key Condition: The Seal must be strong enough to absorb the Killing's energy. If the Seal is too weak or broken by Wealth (財壞印), the transformation fails and the Killing attacks directly.

Formation (格局)Gods InvolvedPositive OutcomeBroken By
食神制殺食神 + 七殺Authority through competence; longevity偏印 (Owl steals meal)

Additional Classical Formations (格局補充)

The following formations represent additional patterns documented in classical texts:

傷官生財 — Hurting Officer Produces Wealth

Structure: 傷官 (Shāng Guān) produces 財 (Cái)

Mechanism: Technical brilliance channeled into wealth creation. The rebellious intellect finds commercial application.

Life Pattern: Tech entrepreneurs, inventors who monetize innovations, lawyers who win big cases

Broken If: 正官 (Direct Officer) appears and is attacked → legal troubles derail wealth

官印雙全 — Officer and Seal Both Complete

Structure: 正官 + 正印 both present and strong

Mechanism: Legitimate authority backed by credentials and institutional support. The "gentle scholar-official" archetype.

Life Pattern: High-ranking civil servants, tenured professors, credentialed professionals

Broken If: 傷官 attacks the Officer or 財 breaks the Seal

殺印相生 — Seven Killings and Seal Mutually Produce

Structure: 七殺 produces 印, 印 nurtures Day Master

Mechanism: Extreme pressure (殺) is transformed through learning (印) into personal power. The "warrior-sage."

Life Pattern: Leaders who emerge from hardship, scholars with real-world authority

Key: Seal must be strong enough to absorb the Killing energy

食神生財 — Eating God Produces Wealth

Structure: 食神 (Shí Shén) produces 財 (Cái)

Mechanism: Natural talent flows outward as a steady wealth stream. "Soft" gift creates "hard" living.

Life Pattern: Highly paid specialists, artists, consultants, fine chefs

Broken If: 梟奪食 (Owl steals meal) — 偏印 attacks 食神

財官雙美 — Wealth and Officer Both Auspicious

Structure: Strong 財 + Strong 官 in favourable positions

Mechanism: Wealth supports Officer (財生官), creating simultaneous financial success and social status.

Life Pattern: Business leaders with social standing, philanthropists with official recognition

Requirement: Day Master must be strong enough to handle both

羊刃駕殺 — Yang Ren Controls Seven Killings

Structure: 羊刃 (Yang Ren) + 七殺 interacting

Mechanism: The intense, sharp Yang Ren is used to "drive" or control the Seven Killings. Extremely powerful but dangerous formation.

Life Pattern: Military commanders, high-risk leaders, those who wield dangerous power successfully

Warning: If poorly configured, leads to violent death or catastrophe

傷官配印 — Hurting Officer Paired with Seal

Structure: 傷官 + 印 balanced

Mechanism: The Seal "tames" the Hurting Officer's rebellion, channeling brilliance into constructive output.

Life Pattern: Reformers who work within systems, innovators who gain institutional support

Contrast: Unlike 傷官見官, this produces genius rather than destruction

身殺兩停 — Self and Killings Both Strong

Structure: Day Master and Seven Killings both powerful and balanced

Mechanism: Neither overwhelms the other — a standoff that produces immense capability under pressure.

Life Pattern: Those who thrive in high-stakes environments, "pressure makes diamonds"

Requirement: Precise balance; if either tips, the formation fails

殺重用印 — Heavy Killings Uses Seal

Structure: Strong 七殺 + 印 as the rescue

Mechanism: When Seven Killings is overwhelming, the Seal is the only element that can transform it into support.

Life Pattern: Those who survive extreme pressure through education, credentials, or institutional protection

Key: Seal must be genuine and unbroken

財旺生官 — Prosperous Wealth Produces Officer

Structure: Strong 財 + 官 receiving support

Mechanism: Financial success translates into official status or authority.

Life Pattern: Businesspeople who gain government positions, wealth converted to social standing

Warning: If Officer is absent or broken, wealth alone cannot produce status

印賴殺生 — Seal Relies on Killings to Produce

Structure: 印 needs 七殺 to be activated

Mechanism: A weak Seal becomes strong when Seven Killings feeds it. Pressure creates the credentials.

Life Pattern: Those whose education/credentials come from overcoming adversity

Example: Scholarships earned through competition, degrees obtained under pressure

專旺格 — Dominant Force Structure

Structure: One element completely dominates the chart

Mechanism: Instead of balance, the chart follows the strongest force entirely.

Subtypes: 曲直格, 炎上格, 稼穡格, 從革格, 潤下格

Requirement: Must be pure — mixed elements break the formation

Special Structures (特殊格局)

從殺格 — Follow Seven Killings

Structure: Day Master extremely weak, Seven Killings overwhelmingly strong

Mechanism: The Self "surrenders" and follows the Killings instead of resisting. The enemy becomes the master.

Life Pattern: Those who submit to authority and rise within it; servants who become powerful

Broken If: Resource or Companion element appears to "rescue" the Day Master

從財格 — Follow Wealth

Structure: Day Master extremely weak, Wealth overwhelmingly strong

Mechanism: The Self abandons itself to pursue wealth. Money becomes the master.

Life Pattern: Extreme wealth accumulation, often through complete dedication to financial pursuits

Broken If: Companion element appears to compete for wealth

從兒格 — Follow Output (Children)

Structure: Day Master extremely weak, Output overwhelmingly strong

Mechanism: The Self pours entirely into expression and creation. Output becomes the focus.

Life Pattern: Artists, creators who sacrifice everything for their work; those defined by their output

Broken If: Resource element appears to "protect" the Day Master

化氣格 — Transformation Structure

Structure: Heavenly Stems combine and transform into a different element

Mechanism: Two stems combine (e.g., 甲己合) and "transform" into a different elemental nature.

Subtypes: 化木格, 化火格, 化土格, 化金格, 化水格

Requirement: The transformation must be supported by the Earthly Branches

建祿格 — Established Lu Structure

Structure: Lu (祿) appears in Month Branch, Day Master same polarity

Mechanism: The Lu represents the peak position of the Day Master's element. Great strength.

Life Pattern: Self-made individuals, those who build through their own strength

Warning: If too strong without Output or Wealth, becomes "idle strength"

羊刃格 — Yang Ren Structure

Structure: Yang Ren (羊刃) in Month Branch for Yang Day Masters

Mechanism: The blade represents extreme intensity and potential for violence or great achievement.

Life Pattern: Surgeons, military personnel, those who work with sharp instruments or make decisive cuts

Must Have: Seven Killings or Officer to "use" the blade; otherwise self-destruction

Broken Formations (破格類型)

These patterns indicate formations that have failed or reversed:

  • 官殺混雜: Both Direct Officer and Seven Killings present without one being eliminated → confused authority, multiple superiors, unstable career
  • 財多身弱: Too much Wealth for a weak Day Master → wealth overload, health collapse, money controls the person
  • 印多身滯: Too much Resource creates stagnation → overprotected, passive, unable to act independently
  • 比劫奪財: Companions rob the Wealth → money lost to friends, siblings, or partners
  • 梟神奪食: Indirect Resource attacks Eating God → creativity destroyed, health issues, bad luck

5. Mangpai (盲派) Ten Gods Application

The Mangpai (盲派 — Blind School) tradition interprets the Ten Gods through a fundamentally different lens than the mainstream Wuxingpai (五行派 — Five Element School) . While Wuxingpai asks "Is the Day Master strong or weak?" and prescribes a balancing "Useful God" (用神), Mangpai asks: "What work is being done, and who is doing it?"

The Three Pillars of Mangpai Reading

  1. 做功 (Zuò Gōng) — "Doing Work": Which Ten God is actively engaged in capturing, controlling, or transforming another?
  2. 賓主 (Bīn Zhǔ) — Guest vs. Host: Is the wealth/power in my territory (Host) or the outside world (Guest)?
  3. 象 (Xiàng) — "Image Reading": What real-world story does this interaction paint?

Guest vs. Host Theory

The chart is divided into two territories:

  • Host (主 Zhǔ) = Day Pillar + Hour Pillar: Represents me , my body, my family, my tools, my inner world.
  • Guest (賓 Bīn) = Year Pillar + Month Pillar: Represents the world , others, my boss, external wealth, society, the environment.

Success in Mangpai is defined as: the Host uses its Ten Gods (tools) to capture or work on the Guest's resources . If Wealth sits in the Guest position and the Host has Output (食/傷) to produce it — the native earns from the world. If Wealth sits in the Host but is "robbed" by the Guest — the native loses money to others.

做功 — The "Doing Work" Framework

In Mangpai, a Ten God is only meaningful if it does something . An "idle god" (閒神) — one that sits in the chart without interacting — represents wasted potential or a boring life. The six types of "work" are:

Work TypeChineseMechanismExample
Control剋 KèDirect suppression (Fire controls Metal)傷官 suppressing 正官 → reformer
Combine合 HéCapturing/bringing to self (甲己合)Day Master combines Wealth → stable income
Transform化 HuàConverting negative into positive印化殺 → hardship becomes credentials
Clash沖 ChōngMoving or breaking openClashing open a Tomb → releasing stored Wealth
Pierce穿 ChuānAggressive destruction / "Blind School specialty"穿 the Spouse Palace → sudden divorce
Grave/Tomb墓 MùCollecting and storing energyWealth entering Tomb → hidden assets

象 — Image Reading (Xiàng)

The final step in Mangpai is translating the abstract Ten God interactions into vivid real-world imagery. Each God carries concrete "images":

  • 七殺: Weapons, tigers, sharp pain, spirits, high-stakes authority
  • 食神: Food, mouth, children, professional skills, "The Happy Buddha"
  • 偏財: Stock markets, jewelry, real estate, a mistress, big business
  • 正印: Houses, vehicles, books, royal decrees, schools
  • 傷官: Reproductive organs, sharp tools, vanity, innovation, lawyers
  • 劫財: Arms, muscle, gambling dens, aggressive sales, "borrowed power"

When reading a chart, the Mangpai practitioner asks: "What is the story being told? Who is doing what to whom?" The answer paints a cinematic picture of the native's life trajectory.

6. Case Studies — Ten Gods in Action

The following real-world examples demonstrate how Ten God patterns manifest in life outcomes. Each case is analyzed using both the traditional archetype lens and Mangpai's "Doing Work" methodology.

Case 1: 殺印相生 — Political Mastery (Chairman Mao Zedong)

年:癸巳  |  月:甲子  |  日:丁酉  |  時:甲辰

Day Master: 丁 Fire (Yin Fire) — a candle flame, quietly intense.

Key Ten Gods:

  • 七殺 (Seven Killings): 癸 Water in the Year Stem attacks the 丁 Day Master — relentless external pressure from the world (Guest position).
  • 正印 (Direct Seal): 甲 Wood in Month and Hour Stems — the Seal transforms the Killing's pressure into nourishment (殺→印→我).
  • Formation: 殺印相生 (Killing and Seal mutually produce). The world's dangers (殺) are alchemized into power and authority (印) that feeds the Self.

Mangpai "Doing Work": The Host (Day 丁酉 + Hour 甲辰) uses the Seal (甲) to capture the power of the Guest (癸巳 + 甲子). The 酉 (Day Branch) represents Metal/Wealth controlled by Fire — dominion over the nation's resources.

Outcome: Founded the People's Republic of China; absolute authority through ideological transformation of crisis into governance. The "warrior-sage" archetype perfectly realized.

Source: Duan Jianye (段建業) analysis in Ming Shu Zhi Wen (命書指聞).

Case 2: 開庫得財 — Global Wealth (Jack Ma / Ma Yun)

年:甲辰  |  月:甲戌  |  日:丁酉  |  時:乙巳

Day Master: 丁 Fire (Yin Fire) — same Day Master as Mao, but entirely different "work."

Key Ten Gods:

  • 偏財 (Indirect Wealth): 酉 Metal in the Day Branch — the Host's wealth, "my" resources.
  • Vault Clash: 辰 (Year) and 戌 (Month) form an Earth clash — "Opening the Vault" (開庫). The 戌 is the Fire/Earth Vault containing enormous stored energy.
  • Formation: When the 辰戌 clash activates, the stored wealth is released. The 巳 (Hour) represents his platform (the engine that captures global commerce).

Mangpai "Doing Work": Guest (Year 甲辰 + Month 甲戌) contains the world's wealth locked in Vaults. The Host (Day 丁酉 + Hour 乙巳) provides the Fire to "melt the lock." The 辰戌沖 is the critical "work" — cracking open the treasure chest.

Outcome: Multi-billionaire; Alibaba became the world's largest e-commerce platform. The "Opening the Vault" formation produced global-scale wealth when the correct Luck Pillar arrived.

Source: Duan Jianye (段建業) Mangpai analysis.

Case 3: 穿宮換偶 — Multiple Marriages (Piercing the Spouse Palace)

年:己酉  |  月:丁卯  |  日:庚午  |  時:丙戌

Day Master: 庚 Metal (Yang Metal) — Female native, born 1969.

Key Ten Gods:

  • 正官 (Direct Officer = Husband star for females): 丁 Fire in Month Stem + 丙 Fire in Hour Stem — two Officer stars, representing multiple partners.
  • Spouse Palace: 午 (Day Branch) is clashed by 子 (when it arrives in transit) and "pierced" (穿) by 卯 (Month Branch).
  • Mangpai Logic: "穿宮破夫宮" — Piercing the Spouse Palace is the primary indicator of divorce in Blind School tradition. The Officer star appearing in both Guest and Host means she constantly seeks partners "outside."

Outcome: Three marriages, all ending in divorce. The "rotating spouse" pattern manifested each time a Luck Pillar clashed or combined away the Spouse Palace branch.

Source: Mingli Zhenyi (命理真義) case collection.

Case 4: 開鎖暴富 — "Opening the Lock" (From Laborer to Tycoon)

年:辛丑  |  月:辛丑  |  日:癸酉  |  時:壬戌

Day Master: 癸 Water (Yin Water) — Male native, born 1961.

Key Ten Gods:

  • 偏財 (Indirect Wealth): 戌 (Hour Branch) is the "Fire Vault" — enormous Wealth stored but locked.
  • Metal Lock: 丑 (Year + Month branches) are "Metal Vaults" — they "lock" the Wealth Vault shut. Double 辛丑 creates a powerful seal.
  • Opening the Lock: When the 丙午 (Bǐng Wǔ) Luck Pillar arrived, the Fire energy "melted" the Metal lock (丑) and simultaneously "opened" the Fire Vault (戌). Massive Wealth was released.

Mangpai "Doing Work": The natal chart has no active "work" — an "idle" chart where Wealth is present but inaccessible. The Luck Pillar provides the key (丙 Fire) that activates the dormant mechanism. This is the "Opening the Lock" (開鎖) concept: a mediocre natal chart that transforms through timing.

Outcome: Went from a manual laborer to a real estate tycoon within a single 10-year Luck Pillar. Demonstrates Mangpai's emphasis on timing over natal strength.

Source: Duan Jianye (段建業) classroom case notes.

Case 5: 食神生財 — Tech Entrepreneur Success

年:丙寅  |  月:辛卯  |  日:癸亥  |  時:丙辰

Day Master: 癸 Water (Yin Water) — Male native, born 1986.

Key Ten Gods:

  • Eating God (食神): 丙 Fire appears in Year and Hour Stems — double Eating God producing natural talent and creativity.
  • Formation: 食神生財 (Eating God produces Wealth). The 丙 Fire (Eating God) is the Output for Water DM, and Fire produces Earth (Wealth). The talent chain is complete.
  • Root Strength: 癸 is rooted in 亥 Day Branch — sufficient strength to handle the output.

Mangpai "Doing Work": The Eating God (丙 Fire) in the Hour pillar is the native's "tool" — it actively produces Wealth (Earth) in the 辰 Hour Branch. The work is being done in the Host position, meaning the wealth stays with the native.

Outcome: Founded a successful software company at age 28. The company's product is a "creative tool" (Eating God expression) that generates steady revenue (Wealth). Net worth exceeded $50M by age 35.

Warning: If 偏印 (Owl) had appeared in the chart, the 梟奪食 pattern would have destroyed the formation. This native was fortunate to have no Indirect Resource interference.

Source: Contemporary business case analysis, 2023.

Case 6: 官殺混雜 — Multiple Relationships Pattern

年:乙未  |  月:辛巳  |  日:甲申  |  時:辛未

Day Master: 甲 Wood (Yang Wood) — Female native, born 1955.

Key Ten Gods:

  • 官殺混雜: 辛 Metal appears in both Month and Hour Stems (Direct Officer), while 申 Metal in Day Branch is Seven Killings. Both Officer types present = confused relationship pattern.
  • Spouse Palace Clashed: 申 (Day Branch) is the Spouse Palace, and it forms 寅申沖 potential (when 寅 arrives in transit). The marriage seat is unstable.
  • Rob Wealth in Year: 乙 Wood in Year Stem = Rob Wealth for 甲 DM. This represents competition for partners.

Relationship History: Three marriages. First husband (正官 pattern) was respectable but boring — divorced after 7 years. Second relationship (七殺 pattern) was passionate but volatile — ended in dramatic breakup. Third marriage (late 40s) finally stable after the 官殺混雜 was "resolved" by age and wisdom.

Remediation: Classical texts advise 去官留殺 or 去殺留官 (remove one, keep the other) through timing or conscious choice. This native chose to "keep the Officer" (stable partner) and reject the "Killings" (dangerous attraction) in her third marriage.

Source: Relationship counseling case, Hong Kong, 2018.

Case 7: 晚年開庫 — Late-Life Wealth Activation

年:丁丑  |  月:壬寅  |  日:己酉  |  時:戊辰

Day Master: 己 Earth (Yin Earth) — Male native, born 1937.

Key Ten Gods:

  • Wealth in Tomb: 丑 (Year Branch) and 辰 (Hour Branch) are both "Tomb" branches capable of storing Water (Wealth for Earth DM). The wealth is present but "locked."
  • Seal Present: 丙 Fire hidden in 寅 Month Branch provides some warmth and support.
  • Output Strong: 酉 (Day Branch) = Metal = Output for Earth. The native has productive capacity but no clear "work" in the natal chart.

Mangpai Analysis: The chart is "idle" in youth — Wealth is locked in Tombs, Output exists but has nothing to work on. The native worked as a modest schoolteacher for 35 years. However, when the 戌 Luck Pillar arrived (age 66-75), it clashed with 辰 (辰戌沖) — "Opening the Vault."

Outcome: At age 68, inherited family land that was rezoned for development. Received compensation of $3M — wealth that was "locked" in the chart for 60+ years suddenly released. The native's comfortable retirement was funded by this late-life activation.

Lesson: Some charts are "time-release" formations. The natal chart shows potential, but the Luck Pillar timing determines when (or if) that potential manifests.

Case 8: 官印相生 — Academic Authority Path

年:己未  |  月:丙子  |  日:辛酉  |  時:壬辰

Day Master: 辛 Metal (Yin Metal) — Female native, born 1979.

Key Ten Gods:

  • Direct Officer (正官): 丙 Fire in Month Stem = Direct Officer for Metal DM. The Officer is the "legitimate authority" star.
  • Direct Resource (正印): Earth (己, 未, 辰) is abundant in the chart = strong Seal. The Seal represents credentials, institutional backing, and protection.
  • Formation: 官印相生 — Officer produces Seal (Fire → Earth), Seal nurtures Self (Earth → Metal). The authority-credential chain is complete and mutually supportive.

Career Path: PhD in Economics from top university (Seal = academic credentials). Joined government economic advisory board at age 35 (Officer = official position). Promoted to department head at 42 (Officer + Seal = authority with credentials).

Why This Works: The Officer-Seal formation produces the classic "scholar-official" archetype. Unlike the Seven Killings path (which requires crisis), this is the stable, institutional path to power. The native's authority comes from expertise and credentials, not force or charisma.

Risk: If 財 (Wealth) had been strong in the chart, it could have broken the Seal (財壞印), causing the credentials to be questioned or the institutional backing to withdraw. Fortunately, Wealth is minimal in this chart.

❧ Medical BaZi Case Studies ❧

Medical BaZi Case Studies — Health Patterns in Action

The following cases demonstrate how Ten God patterns manifest as physical health conditions. Each case illustrates the principle that constitutional predisposition + timing trigger = health event. These are drawn from classical medical BaZi records and contemporary clinical practice.

Health Case 1: 七殺過旺 — Autoimmune Disease from Chronic Stress

年:壬申  |  月:辛亥  |  日:丙午  |  時:壬辰

Day Master: 丙 Fire (Yang Fire) — Female native, born 1992.

Ten God Analysis:

  • Seven Killings (七殺): 壬 Water appears in both Year and Hour Stems — double Seven Killings attacking the 丙 Fire Day Master from both sides.
  • No Seal (無印): Wood (which could transform the Killings) is completely absent from the chart. The Killings has no buffer.
  • Self-rooted: 午 (Day Branch) provides a root for 丙 Fire, giving the Day Master enough strength to survive — but at constant cost.

Medical Pattern: Double Seven Killings = chronic external pressure on the self. Without Seal (the "protector"), the body remains in a permanent fight-or-flight state. Cortisol chronically elevated. Immune system becomes dysregulated — attacking self (autoimmune) rather than external threats.

Timing Trigger: At age 30 (2022, 壬寅 year), another 壬 Water (Seven Killings) arrived in the Annual Pillar. The 壬-TWO combination created a "Seven Killings reunion" (七殺聚會). The patient developed severe Hashimoto's thyroiditis within months, requiring immediate medical intervention.

Treatment Principle: 印化殺 — Seal transforms Killings. Prescribed Kidney-nourishing and Liver-soothing herbs to create an "internal Seal" that the chart lacks constitutionally. Zuo Gui Wan (左歸丸) for Kidney Yin, Xiao Yao San (逍遙散) for Liver Qi.

Source: Clinical case, Beijing TCM Hospital, 2022.

Health Case 2: 偏印重重 — Insomnia and Obsessive Thinking

年:癸酉  |  月:癸亥  |  日:辛酉  |  時:壬辰

Day Master: 辛 Metal (Yin Metal) — Male native, born 1993.

Ten God Analysis:

  • Indirect Resource (偏印): Double 癸 Water in Year and Month Stems — the "Owl" dominates the chart. 辛 Metal produces Water (Output), which acts as the Resource for the Day Master.
  • Owl Steals the Meal (梟神奪食): The Eating God (甲 Wood, which would be produced by 壬 in Hour) is absent. The Owl has "no meal" to steal, so it turns inward — consuming the native's own Shen (Spirit).
  • Isolation: Double 酉 (Metal) creates a self-contained, internally focused energy.

Medical Pattern: Indirect Resource excess without Eating God outlet = spiritual energy trapped inside. The mind cannot "externalize" through creative expression. Manifests as: severe insomnia (unable to "shut off" the mind), obsessive thinking, paranoid ideation, feeling watched or judged.

Timing Trigger: During 丁巳 Luck Pillar (Fire period), Fire clashed with the chart's Water (丁壬合但沖). The "Owl" was agitated. Patient experienced complete sleep breakdown for 3 months.

Treatment Principle: Nourish Heart Blood, Calm the Owl. Gui Pi Tang (歸脾湯) to tonify Heart-Spleen; Suan Zao Ren Tang (酸棗仁湯) for sleep. Crucially: prescribed creative outlet (writing) to "feed the Owl" externally.

Source: Clinical case, Shanghai Mental Health Center, 2019.

Health Case 3: 木旺乘土 — Liver Wood Attacking Spleen Earth

年:甲寅  |  月:乙卯  |  日:丁巳  |  時:甲辰

Day Master: 丁 Fire (Yin Fire) — Female native, born 1974.

Ten God Analysis:

  • Eating God (食神): Multiple Wood Stems (甲, 乙, 甲) = Output element for Fire DM. This represents the "soft" creative output.
  • Wood Excess: Three Wood Stems + two Wood Branches (寅, 卯) = overwhelming Wood energy.
  • Earth Absent: No Earth element in Stems or primary Branches. Spleen system has zero constitutional support.

Medical Pattern: The classical pattern "肝木乘脾土" (Liver Wood over-controls Spleen Earth). Excessive Wood (Liver) attacks the already-weak Earth (Spleen). This produces: chronic digestive issues, IBS, food sensitivities, bloating after eating, alternating constipation/diarrhea, fatigue after meals.

Timing Trigger: During 戊辰 Luck Pillar (Earth period), the patient's digestive symptoms paradoxically worsened . Why? The arriving Earth "woke up" the Spleen, but the Spleen was then immediately attacked by the overwhelming Wood. The awakened organ became the target.

Treatment Principle: 柔肝健脾 (Soften Liver, Strengthen Spleen). Tong Xie Yao Fang (痛瀉要方) for Liver-Spleen disharmony. Dietary guidance: avoid sour (feeds Wood), emphasize sweet/warm (supports Spleen).

Health Case 4: 火虛水旺 — Heart Weakness with Kidney Excess

年:壬子  |  月:癸亥  |  日:庚申  |  時:壬午

Day Master: 庚 Metal (Yang Metal) — Male native, born 1972.

Ten God Analysis:

  • Eating God (食神): Water is the Output element for Metal DM. Three Water Stems (壬, 癸, 壬) + two Water Branches (子, 亥) = overwhelming Output.
  • Fire Nearly Absent: Only 午 in Hour Branch contains Fire — and it is being extinguished by surrounding Water.
  • Seven Killings (七殺): Fire would be the Killings for Metal DM. The Killings is "drowned" — no authority, but also no Heart fire to warm the system.

Medical Pattern: "Water controls Fire" — the Heart (Fire) is constitutionally weak and surrounded by Water (Kidney excess). This produces: cold extremities, slow pulse, low blood pressure, cardiac fatigue, lack of joy, depression with "heavy" feeling.

Timing Trigger: At age 50 (2022, 壬寅 year), another 壬 Water arrived. The 壬午 Hour combination was disrupted. Patient experienced severe bradycardia (slow heart rate) requiring pacemaker evaluation.

Treatment Principle: 溫陽強心 (Warm Yang, Strengthen Heart). Shen Fu Tang (參附湯) for Heart Yang rescue; Zhi Gan Cao Tang (炙甘草湯) for Heart Blood and Yin. Avoid cold foods and environments.

Health Case 5: 劫財羊刃 — Traumatic Injury from Activated Yang Ren

年:戊午  |  月:己未  |  日:丙午  |  時:丁酉

Day Master: 丙 Fire (Yang Fire) — Male native, born 1978.

Ten God Analysis:

  • Rob Wealth (劫財): 丁 Fire in Hour Stem — same element as Day Master, different polarity.
  • Yang Ren (羊刃): 午 in both Year and Day Branches — for 丙 Fire DM, 午 is the Yang Ren (Blade of the Ram). This indicates predisposition to injury, surgery, or bleeding.
  • Fire Excess: Three Fire Stems + two Fire Branches = extreme Fire energy.

Medical Pattern: Yang Ren activated indicates injury or surgical intervention. Rob Wealth + Yang Ren = high-risk behavior leading to physical trauma. The body is "primed" for sudden external force.

Timing Trigger: In 2020 (庚子 year), 子 Water arrived and clashed with 午 (子午沖). This "activated" both Yang Ren simultaneously. The patient was in a serious car accident in December 2020, requiring emergency surgery for internal bleeding.

Treatment Principle: Post-trauma: Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang (復元活血湯) to move Blood and heal injury. Long-term: Qi and Blood tonification to recover from blood loss. Ba Zhen Tang (八珍湯) for dual Qi-Blood deficiency.

Health Case 6: 官印相生 — Stress-Induced Respiratory Weakness

年:辛酉  |  月:庚子  |  日:乙亥  |  時:庚辰

Day Master: 乙 Wood (Yin Wood) — Female native, born 1981.

Ten God Analysis:

  • Direct Officer (正官): 庚 Metal appears in both Month and Hour Stems — double Officer indicating heavy responsibility and pressure to conform.
  • Direct Resource (正印): Water (子, 亥) generates Wood — the Seal is present and protective.
  • Officer-Seal Formation (官印相生): Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood. The "authority → credential → self" chain is intact.

Medical Pattern: Direct Officer excess = chronic responsibility stress. The native carries heavy burdens (career, family expectations). Metal (Officer) controls Wood (Self). While the Seal provides buffer, the constant pressure weakens the Lung (Metal's organ) and constricts the Liver (Wood's organ).

Timing Trigger: During 甲午 Luck Pillar, 甲 Wood arrived to help the Day Master, but 午 Fire clashed with 子 Water. The Seal (Water) was disrupted. Patient developed chronic bronchitis and asthma during high-stress work periods.

Treatment Principle: 補肺益氣 (Tonify Lung, Benefit Qi). Yu Ping Feng San (玉屏風散) for Wei Qi; Sheng Mai San (生脈散) for Lung Qi and Yin. Lifestyle: reduce responsibility load; delegate; practice "letting go" meditation.

7. Mangpai Application Patterns — Per-God Quick Read

Each Ten God carries a characteristic real-world outcome when it successfully "does work" in the Mangpai sense. These are not abstract projections — they are archetypal case patterns extracted from classical Mangpai master analysis, illustrating the most common expression of each god when its interaction with the chart fires correctly.

Ten GodMangpai "Work" Trigger ScenarioArchetypal Life Outcome
比肩 Bǐ Jiān
Shoulder / Companion
Bi Jian in the Host (Day/Hour) combining with Wealth in the Year pillar (Guest position)Self-made entrepreneur who builds a business through hands-on, boots-on-the-ground networking. Earns by direct personal effort rather than leveraging others. The Self and its "twin" work together to seize market opportunity.
劫財 Jié Cái
Rob Wealth
Jie Cai controlling Qi Sha (Seven Killings) — the aggressive force taming the dangerous forceHigh-ranking military or police officer who commands "aggressive" forces. The competitive, seizing energy is channeled into managing danger. Also: venture capital or high-stakes sales leadership where force creates results.
食神 Shí Shén
Eating God
Shi Shen in the Hour pillar (Host) producing Wealth in the Month pillar (Guest) — the natural output chainHighly paid specialist or artist whose talent flows outward as a steady wealth stream. Income appears effortless but is entirely skill-based. The "soft" gift creates a "hard" living: chefs, consultants, top-tier teachers, fine artists.
傷官 Shāng Guān
Hurting Officer
Shang Guan controlling Direct Officer (Guan) — the rebel overthrowing the establishment's structureHigh-level politician or corporate "fixer" who rises by out-maneuvering institutional authority, breaking old rules to establish new ones. Technical genius channeled into power capture. The practitioner who makes the impossible happen inside a rigid system.
偏財 Piān Cái
Indirect Wealth
Pian Cai in the Year pillar (Guest) — the world's large-scale capital — captured by a strong Day Master (Host)"Capturing wealth from the world" at scale. The native successfully draws large public capital into personal control. Typical of global business founders, major investors, and those whose business is essentially managing other people's money at volume.
正財 Zhèng Cái
Direct Wealth
Zheng Cai combining with the Day Master stem — Wealth drawn into the Host through the stem-combination mechanismSteady, lifetime career in government or a stable corporation. The native effectively "marries" their income source through reliability. Fixed assets accumulate reliably at low risk. Stacks of predictable returns over decades rather than windfalls.
七殺 Qī Shā
Seven Killings
Qi Sha transformed through the 殺印相生 chain: Killings produces Seal, Seal nurtures Day MasterScholar with high administrative power — the classic warrior-sage. Formidable external pressure (Killings) is alchemized through learning (Seal) into governance authority. Political philosophers, high-ranking academic officials, generals-turned-statesmen.
正官 Zhèng Guān
Direct Officer
Guan sitting in the Guest (Year/Month) brought into the Host through a stem combinationObtaining a government job or official title — the classic civil service promotion pattern. The Officer "moves from the world's orbit into my hands," representing formal authority now personally possessed. The native stops being governed and starts governing.
偏印 Piān Yìn
Indirect Seal (Owl)
Pian Yin as the dominant "Work" god in a chart without Eating God — the Owl operates without its prey presentMaster astrologer, elite researcher, or occult specialist. When no Eating God exists to be stolen, the Owl's protection is unambiguous. Deep intuition and mastery in hidden, niche, or esoteric fields. The practitioner of arts others cannot see.
正印 Zhèng Yìn
Direct Seal
Zheng Yin rooted in the Day Branch (Host), providing persistent foundational support to the Day MasterNative is consistently upheld by spouse, family foundation, or institutional backing. The domestic and relational sphere acts as the constant energy source. Common in highly accomplished individuals whose success rests on unusually strong human support networks and family roots.

Practitioner's Note — Reading These Patterns

These case examples represent the optimal firing of each Ten God — scenarios where the work interaction produces its best outcome. In practice, the same pattern expresses at vastly different scales depending on overall chart strength, Luck Pillar timing, and whether the critical "work" is supported or broken by other elements. Always read the case pattern as a template , then qualify it with the chart's full structural context and timing.

A Shi Shen producing Wealth is the right pattern — but whether that produces a street food vendor's modest living or a Michelin-starred chef's empire depends on the chart's supporting structure, the Guest/Host balance, and the stage (長生/帝旺) of each god involved.
