Mangpai interprets the Ten Gods as functional forces , not personality descriptors. While modern BaZi says "Eating God = creative personality," Mangpai says "Eating God = the force that controls Seven Killings." Every god is defined by what it does in the work mechanism , not what it symbolizes in isolation.

比肩 Companion (Bǐ Jiān)

Nature: Same element, same polarity as Day Master. An exact copy of yourself.

Mangpai Function: In the work mechanism, Companion is primarily a wealth-splitter . When you and your "twin" both try to capture the same Wealth, neither gets the full amount. Companion is also a co-worker — when paired together, Companions can overpower targets that the Self alone cannot.

Nature: Same element, opposite polarity as Day Master. Your aggressive counterpart.

Mangpai Function: More dangerous than Companion — Rob Wealth doesn't share, it takes . In work analysis, Rob Wealth on the Host side can be powerful (forceful wealth-seizing) but on the Guest side is devastating (wealth is being stolen from you). Rob Wealth also has a unique interaction with Direct Wealth through combination (合).

Nature: Element generated by Day Master, same polarity. Your natural output.

Mangpai Function: The Eating God is the supreme controller in Mangpai. Its primary job is to control Seven Killings (食神制殺). This is considered the most elegant and efficient work pattern — one Eating God suppressing multiple Killings. The Eating God is also the bridge to Wealth (Self → Eating God → Wealth = generating work chain).

傷官 Hurting Officer (Shāng Guān)

Nature: Element generated by Day Master, opposite polarity. Your rebellious output.

Mangpai Function: The Hurting Officer attacks the Direct Officer — hence the name "Hurts the Officer." In Mangpai work analysis, Hurting Officer is a double-edged sword : it can generate enormous wealth (傷官生財) or destroy career stability (傷官見官). Context determines which.

Nature: Element conquered by Day Master, opposite polarity. What you control through steady effort.

Mangpai Function: Direct Wealth is the primary target of capturing work. It represents stable, earned income. In Mangpai, the key question is: "Can the Day Master actually hold this Wealth?" If the Day Master is too weak (insufficient root), Wealth becomes a burden rather than a blessing.

In Mangpai, Indirect Wealth requires more force to capture because same-polarity conquest is weaker.

The key question is whether the Self can combine with the Officer (合官 = gaining official position) or must submit to it.

Controlled Killings = supreme power. The entire Mangpai system is largely organized around the question: "How do we handle Seven Killings?"

(2) Absorbing hostile forces — transforming Officer/Killings energy into nutrition. The classic 官印相生 (Officer-Seal mutual generation) chain is one of the most prized configurations.

Mangpai Function: Also called the "Owl" (梟神) , Indirect Seal is Mangpai's most treacherous god. It generates the Self (good), but it also conquers the Eating God (catastrophic). When Eating God is the chart's primary work instrument, the appearance of Indirect Seal destroys everything — this is the dreaded 梟印奪食 (Owl robs Eating God) pattern.

How Mangpai Uses Na Yin

Na Yin is NOT used for Five Element calculations (that's a common misunderstanding). Instead, it provides image layers for refining the reading:

Career refinement: "Metal in the Sea" vs "Metal of Swords" — both are Metal Day Masters, but the former suggests hidden talent while the latter suggests decisive action.
Relationship dynamics: Na Yin compatibility between Day Pillars adds nuance to marriage analysis.
Timing precision: When a Luck Pillar's Na Yin element matches or clashes with the natal Na Yin, events become more vivid and specific.

Heavenly Stem Combination Reference (天干合化表)

The five Heavenly Stem combinations are central to Mangpai's Combining Work (合功). Each pair transforms into a specific element:

Combination Conditions (合化條件)

A combination is not automatic . For full transformation to occur:

The two stems must be adjacent (in neighboring pillars) or connected through branches
The season must support the transformed element (e.g., 甲己 → Earth works best in Earth months)
No competing combination or clash should interfere
If conditions aren't met, the stems still "hug" (合而不化) but don't transform — this still counts as work, just reduced efficiency

The Tomb stage is unlike any other. It is not simply "weak" — it is a locked warehouse . Mangpai practitioners must always ask: Is the Tomb open or closed?

Closed Tomb: The god's energy is imprisoned. A Wealth star in a closed Tomb = money you cannot access. A Killing in a closed Tomb = a restrained enemy (beneficial). A Seal in a closed Tomb = knowledge you cannot apply.
Opened Tomb (by Branch Clash 冲): When the Branch that opposes the Tomb appears (in a Luck Pillar or Annual Year), the vault bursts open.
